Barbara Jean Lindsay, 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on September 3, 2023. Born on July 10, 1934, in Vincennes, Indiana, Barbara was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to her work, community, and family.
Barbara was proud of her career as a legal secretary, working tirelessly until the age of 87. She spent 34 years at the esteemed Backer & Backer law firm, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and clients. Barbara also spent time at Stuart & Stuart Law, Bill Knowles & Associates, and Joe Black Law. Her dedication and professionalism were second to none.
Beyond her professional achievements, Barbara had a deep passion for giving back to the community. For five years, she volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospice, where she hosted grief support groups and actively participated in fundraising and community events. Barbara's strength and resilience were evident as she facilitated a weekly suicide survivor's group, providing comfort and support to those in need. She also volunteered at a homeless shelter and for family social services, always lending a helping hand to those less fortunate.
Barbara had a sweet tooth and adored all things chocolate. Her love for euchre was well-known, and she hosted the best euchre games in Vincennes, bringing joy and laughter to those around her. Her wit, passion, and strength will be deeply missed by many.
Barbara is survived by her loving daughters, Kathryn Carpenter MacDonald and Janet Carpenter, as well as her stepson, Michael Lindsay. She is also survived by her sisters Nancy Carter and Patricia Elkins and brother Michael Ruppel. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren: Jake and Lacey Nix, Dennis and Greg Lockhart, Benjamin, Jessica, and Cody Lindsay, Victoria Comer, April Harrah, Thomas Lindsay, Samantha Merriman, Andrew Lindsay, and Kathleen Hamersley. Barbara was preceded in death by her sons, Christopher and Herbert Lindsay, and her husbands, Herbert Carpenter and Jack Lindsay. She also mourned the loss of her stepson, Thomas Lindsay, and grandchild, Christopher Lindsay.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, September 15, from 11 am to 1 pm, with a Service to follow at 1 pm, at Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple, located at 1305 Broad Ripple Avenue. Barbara's final resting place will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Barbara Jean Lindsay will be remembered for her unwavering strength, dedication to her community, and love for her family. Her legacy will continue to inspire and touch the lives of all those who knew her.
