Barbara Anne Materer, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dedicated member of the community, passed away on March 26, 2024 in
Columbia, Missouri. She was born on December 21, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, to her proud parents, James Leon and Violet Leon.
Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Leon, and her niece, Karen Campagna. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Timothy Materer, who shared her final months with her at Cedarhurst Senior Care. Together, they created a beautiful family and shared countless precious moments. She is also survived by her sons, Nicholas and his wife Julia Boyd, Andrew Materer, and Susan Richter and her husband Kurt.
Barbara's lives on through her grandsons, Colin Materer, Neil Materer, and Logan Richter. She adored her grandsons, heaping on them love and care.
Born and raised in Chicago, Barbara pursued her education at Loyola University, where she earned in 1962 her bachelor's degree in history. She was a passionate and dedicated educator, teaching third grade in both Chicago and
Los Altos, California (when she was supporting Tim in graduate school). Later in her career, she tutored math and home-bound students in Columbia. Barbara's patience and kindness left a lasting impact on the lives of her students. She loved hosting parties for Tim's students, and her annual Christmas and St. Patrick parties were well loved.
Barbara's commitment to community service was deep. She volunteered her time at the University of Missouri Newman Center and within the Columbia School system. She received many tributes from students at Grant School for her work in the library.
When she wasn't busy serving the lives of others, Barbara enjoyed her hobbies and interests. She was a skilled tennis player, both as a team member and an individual competitor. Her talent for sewing and needlework was unmatched. She was an avid reader and member of her book club. Barbara was an adventurous traveler, enjoying hikes at Yosemite National Park, in Colorado, and throughout Missouri. She loved visiting archaeological sites in Mexico and on her trips to visit her daughter in Ecuador and Guatemala. She formed deep friendships during her stays in England. Those who knew Barbara will remember her enormous energy and enthusiasm. Her spirit leaves a lasting impression on all who knew her.
A private funeral service will be held to honor Barbara's memory. Although Barbara will be dearly missed, her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the community she served. May she rest in eternal peace.
