Raymond Dockweiler Obituary

Raymond C. Dockweiler (Ray, or "Doc", as his friends and colleagues called him) was born February 15, 1940, to Raymond M. and Marjorie (Hepner) Dockweiler in Hammond, IN. Ray graduated from Thornton Fractional Township High School in 1958, where he met the love of his life, Eleanor K. Dockweiler (Ele). They subsequently married on February 1, 1963.
Ray completed his undergraduate B.S. in Business Education at Miami of Ohio in Oxford, OH, in 1962, and subsequently completed his Masters, CPA and Ph.D. in Accounting at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 1968. Thereafter, Ray and Ele moved to Columbia, MO to start his first teaching position as an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the University of Missouri. He left that position the following year to work at the accounting firm of Arthur Anderson in Chicago before returning permanently to Mizzou in 1970.
Dr. Dockweiler eventually worked his way up and was appointed the Director of the School of Accountancy in 1986, leading the program in that capacity until 1996. Outside of his work with students and colleagues at Mizzou, Ray was the President of the Missouri Chapter of the AICPA from 1994-1995 and was influential in passing legislation in 1993 for the 150-hour program at the University for students in interested in sitting for the CPA exam in conjunction with earning a Masters degree in Accounting. He retired from the University in 2000 and devoted the rest of his life in Columbia to his family, Calvary Episcopal Church, golfing with the Devil Dogs at A.L. Gustin Golf Course and rooting for Mizzou and the Chicago Cubs.
Ray and Ele had two children, Frederick (Fred) and Jeffrey (Jeff), to whom he taught life lessons and a variety of sports as well as coached several baseball teams at Daniel Boone Little League, that included a state title. He also enjoyed and encouraged his six grandchildren with a highlight being a family trip to Maui that celebrated the couple's 50th wedding anniversary.
Ray is survived by his wife, Ele, their sons (and wives), Fred (Renee) and Jeff (Julie) and six grandchildren: Samantha, Brynn, Christopher, Jeffrey, Jr., Andrew and Michael. He is also survived by his younger brother, Tom, and his family, wife Karen, and children Amy, Tom and David, as well as a sister-in-law, Patricia.
Ray will be sorely missed by those that loved and knew him, and remembered for his fighting spirit for life, principles, and conviction at whatever he pursued and achieved in his 85 years on this earth. There is no doubt that he has ascended to be with God, and for those of us that are left behind to remember him, hope he is given preferred tee times in eternity.
A celebration of life, eucharist, burial and reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Calvary Episcopal Church located at 123 S. 9th St., Columbia, MO, 65201. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either Calvary Episcopal Church, or the Raymond C. Dockweiler Scholarship in the School of Accountancy at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Trulaske College of Business.
