Barbara Jean Anderson Michael
February 1, 1936 – December 29, 2020
Barb was born February 1, 1936 to Helen and Fritz Anderson, and raised in Escanaba Michigan. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958 with a degree in Physical Therapy. She married the love of her life, Conrad A. Michael, on June 15, 1958.
Barb will be remembered for her faith, grace and strength. She always had a kind word, an extra seat at the table, or place to stay for someone in need. She was active at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, many ministries, and often gathered people in her home for Bible Studies. In 1972, Barb and Con purchased land in southern Ohio for a retreat center, dedicated it to God, and named it His Land. For years, His Land was a vibrant gathering place for teens, churches and ministries to savor nature, personally connect with God, and strengthen their faith. When Con died suddenly in 1977, Barb was widowed at 41. Despite her devastating grief, her unshakeable faith was a firm foundation and became a lasting legacy.
Barb later obtained a Masters in Rehabilitation from The Ohio State University. Then at age 55, she obtained her law degree from Capital University, inspiring her children and many others. She chaired the Elder Law Committees of both the Ohio State and Columbus Bar Associations, and started an estate planning law practice, Michael & Michael, with her daughter Susan.
Barb peacefully entered her eternal home surrounded by her loving family on December 29, 2020. She is survived by her children Katie Michael, Susan Michael, Mary Michael Bopp and husband Brad Bopp, and Mark Michael and wife Christy Michael, along with her nine grandchildren: Katie, Emily, Justin and Josh Bopp; Alex, Marianne and John Michael; and Peter and Diane Shisler.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, at 2 pm, at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, 2300 Lytham Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43220. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UALC or Young Life. Online condolences may be shared at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
