Barbara H. Potter, age 85, passed away January 30, 2025.
Barbara was the beloved wife of the late Robert Potter; loving mother of Wendy Potter and Joelle (Robert) Maleszyk; devoted grandmother of Allie Cuva, Jacob Cuva, Joseph Maleszyk, and Benjamin Maleszyk; dear sister of the late Lee (Tweedie) Hammer and Roger (Carolyn) Hammer. She was also survived by her 8 nieces and nephews.
Barb graduated in 1958 from Grosse Pointe High School. She went to Michigan State University where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education majoring in English, and later in life, a Master’s Degree in Administration. She was a true Spartan fan!
She married (the late) Robert Potter (Grosse Pointe High School, 1956), and they were together for nearly 62 years. She was a wonderful mom to her 2 daughters Wendy & Joelle. Barb was extremely active as a volunteer at their schools as a stay-at-home mom. Their home and pool, was a gathering place for plenty of parties with friends & family.
As the girls grew older, Barb decided to go back to teaching. She worked as a substitute teacher for years before finally getting a full-time job. Happily, she joined the Fitzgerald Public School District. She worked as a library teacher in all 3 elementary schools, and taught ELA, typing, and an alternative class at Chatterton Middle School. She later moved to the high school where she taught English for 15 years before retiring in 2001.
Barb adored her grandchildren, and retirement provided many more opportunities to spend time with them! She attended nearly all of their sporting events and concerts, and enjoyed talking and playing games with them. She loved son-in-law Rob, and they were fond of razzing each other about the Michigan/ Michigan State rivalry.
She was passionate about reading, golf, playing cards, MSU basketball, and helping others. She spent over 50 years volunteering at her church, Amazing Grace.
She was loved and will be missed by many.
