Barbara Schuit Obituary
Born Monday, May 3, 1954, in Camrose, Alberta, Canada, she was the daughter of Elsie (Jones) Baker and the late David Baker.
Barb committed her life to Jesus at a young age, and in many ways her faith informed the way she lived. Her life was characterized by serving others, and she greatly valued putting the needs of others above her own. Her faith led her to serve as a missionary teacher alongside her husband in the Republic of Palau and Papua New Guinea, where they raised their family.
Barb received her bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta in 1980 and started teaching at Innisfail Junior-Senior High School. While in Palau she taught at Bethania High School and homeschooled her two children. After returning to the United States, Barb taught at Johnstown Christian School in Johnstown, PA. Barb went back to college and received her master's degree of Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007. She was the Children's Librarian at Coyle Free Library, Chambersburg, PA, Head Librarian at Besore Library, Greencastle, PA, and retired as Assistant Director at Johnson Public Library, Hackensack, NJ.
Barb enjoyed welcoming others into her home, sharing her cooking and baking, and laughing with the people she loved. She loved reading, singing in the church choir, sewing, traveling, and being with her grandchildren.
In addition to her mother, she is also survived by her husband, William Schuit; son, Michael (Emily) Schuit; daughter, Jennifer (Matthew) Scofield; grandchildren, Angelia, Owen, Will, Della, and Ezra; sisters, Brenda Bauer and Beverly Baker-Hofmann; and brother, Robert Baker.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 10:30 am, at the Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Eric Cox officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD.
