Barbara M. Shader, 91 of Bath, NY has gone home to be with her family on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, She was born on May 9, 1932 to Sophie (Oleneacz) and Julian Ostrowski in Jersey City, NJ. She graduated from Prattsburgh Central School and business school of Elmira. She was married to Robert L. Shader in 1950 and celebrated 50 years before his death. She worked at Westinghouse and then Great Western Winery in the printing department. She loved her job and the people she worked with and had so many memories she shared with us. She recalled being asked to go to a conference in Atlanta to speak and took great pride in that.
Barb is survived by her daughter; Roxanne (Milton) von Hagn, Daughter-in-law, Kimberlee (Coby Kirk) Shader, Son-in-law, Donald Gleason, grandchildren; Todd (Sheri) von Hagn, Andrea (Lynda) von Witt, Erica (William Chilson) Gleason, Chad (Nikki Rogers) Gleason, Rachel (Jonathon Higger) Shader, Kayla (Ryan McFadden) Shader and Mitchell Shader. Great Grandchildren; Ashley (David) Mitchell, Brenna (Chris Sexsmith) Norton, Will and Grace Chilson, Kayden and Dylon Rogers and Emerson and Jackson von Witt, Sister-in-law, Phyllis Ostrowski and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by; her husband, Robert L. Shader, her son, Robert G. Shader, her daughter, Deborah A. Shader, and daughter, Christine E. Gleason, parents and brothers Donald and Richard Ostrowski. Losing her family was the hardest thing she had to go through. She was a such a strong woman that loved so deeply till her heart could not take anymore. The reunion they must be having, as they welcome her home, is giving us peace.
Mom had the best way of welcoming our families and friends into our family home and cooking the best Polish food.
She could put together the unforgettable parties and make all feel welcome and loved. Her loving spirit attracted people to her and she had many "adopted" kids in the neighborhood. Wheeler was a wonderful place to grow up and to have our many celebrations.
Her last year was living at Steuben Centers where she made many friends and was loved by so many. Her smile would light up a room and make you feel loved. She will be deeply missed by not just her family, but her extended family and friends. May her love live on in all of us and may we extend that love to generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Steuben Centers, Resident's Fund. Residents can use that money to get their hair done. Barb always liked her hair looking nice, and she'd want the same for those still living there.

Aunt Barbara was a wonderful, and kind woman. She ALWAYS made one feel welcome and loved and her brand of kindness was rare. She was genuinely a good person from the inside out in all directions. When I visited as a kid, there was a huge sense of comfort and warmth that pervaded the house. I remember the fires on cold winter mornings and the wonderful meals she would make for the family. Once, while riding my bike I fell and severely cut my hand. Aunt Barbara leaped into action, comforted me and sped me to the hospital. She handled challenges with aplomb. My father, her first cousin, told us kids many stories about their growing up together in the country and how nice she was even as a girl.

NO matter how long it was between visits it always felt as if I had "come home". When people speak about a "great lady" Aunt Barbara was one such woman. I didn't see her often but in my heart she was always a loving presence.

God bless you Aunt Barbara. I know you have been welcomed by so many people who left before you, loved you and were waiting for you. Safe journey. I love you.

What a wonderful obituary. I consider myself one of her "adopted" kids and always referred to her as "Mom" Shader. Her, her husband Robert and kids Bob (my best friend), Debbie, Roxanne and Tina welcomed me into their home when I was 14 years old, 44 years ago, as part of their own and I will be eternally grateful and honored to be thought of as such. One of the greatest compliments to give a person is what a great parent they were and Barbara and Robert were both fantastic as witnessed by their kind, loving, generous, witty and humorous children. Barbara, Robert, Bob, Debbie and Tina will be missed dearly but the memories they all have given me will be, and are, treasured forever. God bless them all and heaven is better with them in it.

I saw Barb crocheting the one day in her room. I then brought in a red, white, and blue blanket that I had crocheted shortly after my grandma taught me to show her. Barb“s eyes lit up and her beautiful smile shined. She was always so appreciative and made me feel so loved. She had experienced a lot of family loss, but her heart never ceased to give love you others. I miss her dearly.
