September 1933 – March 7, 2026
Barbara Ann Shrout, 92, of Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Charter Senior Living of Fredericksburg.
Barbara was born in September 1933 in Washington, D.C., and was a lifelong resident of Northern Virginia. She spent much of her childhood in Annandale alongside her brother, Donald. During her high school years she was known as an excellent student and served as a majorette. She graduated from Fairfax High School in 1951.
In November 1954, Barbara was crowned Miss Cameron Station at the Cameron Station Army Quartermaster Depot. In 1956, she married Jerry Allan Shrout; the marriage later ended in divorce.
Barbara worked full time throughout most of her adult life and was widely known for her ambition and strong work ethic. She briefly stayed home following the birth of each of her daughters before returning to work. She began her career working with the Teamsters in the Washington, D.C. area before joining the federal government. Over the years, she worked her way through a variety of roles, including positions at the Washington Navy Yard, the Department of Defense, and the Pentagon.
After retiring from the federal government in 1994, Barbara remained active and continued working part-time at Bloomingdale's, Upton's, and Dominion Hospital. From 1998 to 2003, she also devoted time to caring for her grandson, Jordan, before he began kindergarten.
Barbara had a deep love of travel. In addition to exploring much of the United States and Puerto Rico, she traveled internationally to Canada, England, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Egypt, and Morocco.
A talented and creative person, Barbara was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed many forms of needlework, including knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. She had a natural eye for design and fashion and took pride in creating and crafting throughout her life. Above all, she was a hardworking single mother who remained deeply dedicated to supporting and caring for her family.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Marlene Kenny and her husband James Kenny, and Brenda Shrout; and her grandson, Jordan Kenny. She is also survived by her niece, Karen Dahn; her niece, Nancy Swithenbank; and her nephew, Russell Hawley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anne Laurel Hawley and Dale Drury Hawley, and by her brother, Donald Dale Hawley.

Barbara will be remembered for her determination, creativity, and dedication to her family. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
