Barbara Ann Sommer, a lifelong resident of South Bend and a beacon of faith and familial love, passed away at 2:02 pm on Saturday, February 14, 2026, in Raclin House. Born on March 8, 1942, to the late John and Blanch (Jamrozy) Sommer, Barbara's life was a testament to the enduring power of devotion and joy.
Barbara's early years in South Bend were shared with her beloved siblings, Patricia Shriner, Rita Sommer, Raymond Sommer, Chester Sommer, John Sommer, and Julius Sommer, all of whom predeceased her. She found strength and comfort in the company of her surviving brothers, Leonard Sommer and Ronald (Evelyn) Sommer, as well as her many cherished nieces and nephews, who will hold her memory dear.
For over four decades, Barbara dedicated herself to her work with unwavering commitment, spending 31 years at Swank Uniform, 3 years at Johnson Controls, and 11 years bringing smiles to customers at Walmart. Her work ethic was matched only by her capacity to find joy in the simple pleasures of life. A lover of television, especially cartoons, Barbara found laughter and relaxation in the animated antics that graced the screen. Her love for word searches was another quiet passion, providing her with hours of contemplation and satisfaction. She enjoyed food. Barbara was also a member of ZB Falcons.
Barbara's love for her family was the cornerstone of her life, always keeping in touch with her nieces and nephews, and ensuring that the bonds of kinship remained strong across the miles and years.
A devout Catholic, Barbara's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She was a dedicated parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka and found solace in her religious practices, often praying the Rosary with a fervent heart. When she could no longer attend Mass in person, she continued to worship by watching services on television, her spirit undimmed by her physical limitations.
Barbara's Funeral will be at 10am on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 in Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel, located at 2528 Mishawaka Ave,
South Bend, IN 46615 where family and friends may begin to gather at 9:30am. Barbara will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Polish Catholic Cemetery in South Bend, where she will be joined by generations of her family.
