Barbara E. Steele

1942 - 2026

Barbara E. Steele, 83, a resident of Dalton since 1967, died Thursday, January 22, at Mt. Greylock Extended Care.

Born in the Bronx, NY, on December 25, 1942, she was educated in the Bronx schools and was a 1960 graduate of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula and a 1962 graduate of Mitchell College in New London, CT, where she earned an associate degree in liberal arts.

Barbara was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. From 1980 to 2000, she utilized her nurturing skills as a childcare provider then later tended to many of those same children when she became a lunch lady at Wahconah Regional High School.

Barbara was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and had been a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield.

Barb loved spending summers with her family and friends in Niantic, CT, where she met her husband, Robert F. Steele Sr., to whom she was married from June 1963 until his death in December 2004. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was deeply proud of her grandchildren and was their biggest cheerleader. If she couldn't be heard in the stands or the audience because of distance, she poured over the photos and videos of the events she missed.

Barbara is survived by her son, Robert F. Steele Jr. and his wife Pamela of Charlotte, NC, her two daughters - Susan Beaudoin and her husband David of Dalton and Amy Steele-Whitney and her husband Michael of Schuylerville, NY. She will be especially missed by her grandchildren, Andrew, Kathryn, Jackson and Ellie and her step grandchildren, Lizzy, Flora and Vivienne. In addition to her husband, Barbara was pre-deceased by their son, William C. Steele (1974).

Barbara's family would like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at the Mt. Greylock Extended Care and Sugar Hill Assisted Living Community.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Barbara E. Steele will be held Saturday, January 31, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., at St. Agnes Church celebrated by Rev. Brian McGrath, Pastor. Burial will follow at Ashuelot Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dalton Fire District in care of DERY-FOLEY Funeral Home, 890 E. Main Street, Dalton.
