It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Story Cleveland, who fell asleep in the Lord on October 3, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on May 12, 1940, Barbara led a life filled with love, dedication, and unwavering strength.
Barbara was married to Gale K. Cleveland, the love of her life, for over 60 wonderful years. Together, they shared a bond that was a testament to true partnership, love, and mutual respect. Gale, having served a distinguished career in the United States Navy, found pride in Barbara's unwavering support and commitment as a Navy wife. She embraced the challenges of military life with grace and resilience, always standing strong for her family.
Her faith in Jesus Christ was the utmost guiding light in Barbara's life. She was a devoted prayer warrior, always encouraging others to seek God in all things. Her spiritual strength and compassion touched the lives of many, reflecting her deep commitment to her faith.
As a devoted mother, Barbara took great pride in raising her children, Tami Cleveland Clark and Wilton Dwayne Cleveland. With Gale often at sea, she bravely carried the lion's share of parenting, nurturing her children with love and instilling in them the values of hard work and perseverance.
Barbara's career as Director of Environmental Services was marked by her dedication and professionalism. She served with distinction at a beachfront resort hotel in Virginia Beach, VA, Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College), and multiple Baptist hospital facilities throughout Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. While Barabara and Gale owned and operated a motel and restaurant, Barbara was elected and served as mayor of Gillett, Arkansas.
Her work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident throughout her life, and she touched the lives of many with her caring spirit. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Wilton and Edna Story Sr.; her brothers, Wilton Story Jr. and Eddie Story; her grandson, Brayden Gilbreth; and her great-grandson, River Rhea.
She is survived by her husband, Gale K. Cleveland; her sister, Betty Sue Story; her daughter, Tami Clark (Byron); her son, Wilton Cleveland (Bianca); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Barbara will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but also for her warmth, kindness, and the love she shared with all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication that will continue to inspire her family and friends
Visitation for Barbara will be held on October 4th, 2025, from 3pm to 5pm at Canale Funeral Directors at 2700 Union Extended, Memphis, TN 38122. The family invites all who knew her to join in honoring her memory and sharing stories of the impact she had on their lives. Barbara's internment will take place on October 13, 2025 at the West Tennessee Veteran's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to Barbara's heart.
