Barbara "Barb" Techmeier died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Marinette, Wisconsin on Friday, October 27, 2023 at the age of 92.
She was born Barbara Jean Walters on September 1, 1931 in Hillside, Illinois to Irma LaRosa Garbaldi Albinola Walters and Joseph H. Walters. She married the love of her life, Martin Techmeier, on April 29, 1950.
During the early years of their marriage, they built a house in the Town of Lake where they celebrated the births of their children. In 1970, they purchased their long-time family home on North Emery Avenue in Peshtigo, Wisconsin.
As a young woman, Barbara received her teacher training from the Oshkosh Normal School and went on to teach K-8 students at Wood School, a small rural one-room school in Marinette County. She later taught elementary school at St. Mary's parochial school in Peshtigo, Wisconsin. After leaving teaching she went on to get training as a dietitian and worked at Newberry Nursing Care as the Director of Food Service and later as an aide in activity. She also volunteered at Head Start and in the elementary classes of the Peshtigo School District. For many years, she entertained children at various library programs as the Easter Bunny and Mrs. Claus. She also loved to babysit.
Barbara's family will remember her as a dedicated and hardworking mother and grandmother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. The two things Barbara loved in life next to her family were gardening and cooking.
Barbara is survived by her children Jenifer, Michael and Judy; grandchildren Matthew, Patrick and Christopher; great-grandchildren Paige, Braydon, Taylin and Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed greatly by former daughter-in-law Debbie and family friend Dave, both of whom offered tremendous support the last several years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Martin "Punk" Techmier, and their son, Jamie, who died as an infant from birth defects. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Walters, who passed away in June of 2023 at the age of 102, and a sister Lorraine, who died as the result of a car accident before Barbara was born.
Per Barbara's wishes, there will be no funeral or reception. Her ashes will be interred next to her husband at the Forest Home Cemetery Mausoleum in Marinette, WI. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made to the charity of your choice or to the Peshtigo Public Library. Cards of condolence can be sent to 160 N Emery Avenue, Peshtigo, WI.
For their wonderful and compassionate care, the family expresses gratitude to Promedica Hospice of DePere, and to Nurse Practitioner Jessica Flaeschel of Bellin Health, Peshtigo.
