Barbara loved to travel and was never happier than when in the front passenger seat seeing all of the US and much of western Canada with her husband and family. Don predeceased Barbara in 2013 but she continued to honor him each year in her travels even as recent as a month before her death.
Barbara and Don had a very special love of Samoyeds – breeding and showing dogs for almost 60 years. She was a dedicated member of the Samoyed Club of America, the Houston Kennel Club and founding member of the Houston World Series of Dog Shows, now in its 47th year. Barbara's particular focus each year was a featured event, The Dr. Mari Jon Filla Student Art Exhibit, providing recognition and awards to Houston area students in grades K-12. Fellow Houston Kennel Club members in 2019 honored her with the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award as deserving special recognition for making a difference in the sport of purebred dogs. Understandably, members of the Samoyed Club of America are mourning a loss of an "icon" in the breed.
Barbara was a reserved resourceful woman with great intellect and pride in her children (4), grandchildren (16) and great grandchild (1).
Visitation will be Saturday, December 14 from 10:00 – 11:00 am followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am. The Service will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home and she will be laid to rest between her husband and father in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Barbara to the Samoyed Club of America, 220 Fir Place, Goleta, CA 93117
