Bareld Egge Groenwold

Bareld Egge Groenwold, age 86, of Heathsville, VA passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025 at VCU Health in Tappahannock. He was born on June 12, 1939 in Exloermond, Holland. Bareld's life was defined by curiosity, dedication, and a love of discovery. He and his wife, Lien, came to the United States so he could pursue his doctorate in agricultural weed control, earning his Ph.D. from Oregon State University in 1971.
His career spanned several decades and continents, during which he made significant contributions to the field of agricultural science and was awarded three patents for herbicide innovations.
Bareld enjoyed his retirement in Heathsville, Virginia tremendously. As a devoted member of the Heathsville United Methodist Church, he played piano for more than twenty years, sharing his love of music with his congregation. He was also an active member of the Master Gardeners and the local Lions Club, finding great fulfillment in community and friendship. He loved a good joke, good Mexican food and good company.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lien; his sons, Robert and Raymond; his granddaughter Sophie, and grandson Gabriel. He will be missed by family and friends alike.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on October 25, 2025 at Heathsville United Methodist Church in Heathsville, VA.
