Barry Francis Fleming, of Northbrook, passed away peacefully August 5, 2025. Barry was born to Thomas and Margaret Mary Fleming on October 4, 1934 in Chicago. He was raised in Delevan, Wisconsin when his family moved there in 1939.
Barry's steadfast love for his family was his greatest accomplishment. While studying at Marquette University Barry met the love of his life, Mary Migliaccio. What began as an invitation to his fraternity's Fall Ball led to Barry driving 12-hour round trips, after graduation, to spend time with Mary on the weekends. Their young love flourished into 66 years of marriage and raising their four children, Tom, Peggi, Barry and Patrick.
Barry was an amazing listener, teacher, and mentor to many. An avid reader and steadfast academic, he would start each day with a crossword puzzle and a smile. His sense of humor was unrivaled, delivering his pranks and jokes with that same smile and the saying "I have a million of 'em".
He especially cherished deer hunting trips to Canuper Cabin creating many of the traditions that brought generations together. Barry passed down to his sons, grandsons, and great grandsons not only his knowledge and skills, but also his values and love of the outdoors, while creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Barry's distinguished accomplishments began with earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Marquette University, where he was a member of Triangle Fraternity of Engineers and Architects. He remained closely connected to his alma mater through dedicated involvement in the Marquette University Alumni Association and chaired his 50-year class reunion.
He went on to receive his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Archimedes Circle in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of USC's School of Engineering. His involvement continued for the next 30 years serving as a USC Midwest Alumni Club Board member. Barry was the spirited host of numerous gatherings for the annual USC vs. Notre Dame football games, fostering Trojan pride in the Midwest.
Always eager to continue learning and leading, Barry earned his MBA from Loyola University, where he also served two terms as MBA Association President.
A Registered Professional Engineer in five states-California, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, and Wisconsin-Barry built a respected career marked by integrity, technical excellence, and leadership.
He also proudly served his country and is a United States Army veteran.
Barry began his professional career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He served as a project engineer on Intercontinental Ballistic Missile facility development in Los Angeles, California. He served as a liaison between the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Pentagon from 1959-1967, for which he had Secret Service clearance. Subsequently, he worked as a soil engineer in southern California. His career path eventually led him into the insurance industry, where he attained Charted Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Designations with Marsh & McLennan before retiring from Zurich Insurance.
Barry was deeply engaged in his local community. As a member of St. Norbert Parish in Northbrook, Barry was involved with the Men's Club and planned annual St. Patrick's Day parties, Oktoberfests, and other parish activities. He also contributed his time generously to the Northbrook Civic Foundation, which included volunteer work at Northbrook Days. Barry was always ready to lend a helping hand. He served the Community of Northbrook well.
Barry was the devoted husband to Mary Fleming (nee Migliaccio); loving father of Thomas (Janet) Fleming, Peggi (Nick III) Keller, the late Captain Barry Fleming, USMC, Patrick (Maureen) Fleming; proud grandfather of Major Christopher Fleming, USAF, Jennifer Fleming, Amanda (Mike) Kanevsky, Major Nicholas (Maggie) Keller IV, USA, Quinn (Captain Paige, USA) Keller; cherished great grandfather of Nicholas V, Anne, Barry, Grace, Finley and Abigail Keller; dear brother of Margaret Mary, (late Emil, MD) Pawlowski, MD, Late Thomas (late Sue) Fleming, Dermot (late Jean) Fleming, DDS, Late Maeveen (late Richard) Jeffrey, Nonnie (late John) Rooney, late Sheila (Ed) Devine and late Brian Fleming; Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Barry will be remembered for his warmth, intellect, mentorship, and enduring commitment to faith, education, and service. He leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and love. He touched many lives and will be missed dearly.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 22, 2025, from 10 am to 12 noon with a Mass at 12:30pm at St. Norbert & Our Lady of the Brook Parish, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook.
