In Loving Memory

Basmat Parsad AKA Joyce

March 30, 1952 – August 16, 2025

Please join the family for a funeral service on Saturday 23, 2025 from 12:00am to 4:00pm at the Thibadeau Mortuary Chapel, p.a. E Diamond Ave, Gaithersburg, MD 20877. There will be a funeral reception at Basmat's house at 22524 Castle Oak Road, Clarksburg, Maryland 20871.

Basmat was born March 30, 1952, in Guyana and was the second youngest of seven children in her family. She has a son (Romain Parsad, daughter (Charmaine Parsad), husband (Renial Shiwparsad), son in law (Steven Tucker) and daughter in law (Amanda Parsad). She also has 4 grandkids (Aiden Parsad, Maya Parsad, Austin Tucker, Connor Tucker). She attended the Cyril Potter College of Education and earned a degree in Education/Teaching and then the University of Guyana and earned a distinction bachelor’s degree in social psychology. Basmat later got a full bright scholarship from the University of Guyana where she attended the University of Maryland College Park for her Masters and Ph. D in Social Psychology.

Basmat taught at all levels in schools and at the universities in Guyana and the United States such as the University of Maryland. She also was a Research Director at Westat where she oversaw research for the U.S. Department of Education.

She was a very loving, generous helpful, caring, loyal, and kind person to everyone. At church she was a Deacon, led worship and prayer groups, was involved in tithes and offering management committees, involved in feeding the homeless, assisting with warm nights at church, creating programs for University of Maryland International students. She was a great wife and supportive and loving mother. Basmat liked to travel, spend time with family, cooking, looking at movies, and engaging in church activities.

Basmat passed away on August 16, 2025, at the age of 73 with her family by her side. She fought bravely to recover from the major stroke she had last September but with her other health complications, it was an uphill battle that took all that she had. All things considered; she still fought a good fight. Her unwavering faith and deep love, loyalty, and support for her family was an inspiration for all.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Basmat’s life on this dedicated webpage. Your condolences, stories, videos, and pictures will be cherished by the family and provide comfort during this difficult time.
