Bastian Marion Den Hartog

On February 12, 2023, Jesus called Bastian Marion Den Hartog home.
Marion was born on October 13, 1931, in Pleasant Township, near Eddyville, Iowa to Bastiaan Willem and Margaret (Van Dyke) Den Hartog. Marion was the youngest of three sons (brothers John T. Den Hartog and Tunis E. Den Hartog both predeceased Marion).
Following his father who was a meat cutter in grocery stores, Marion lived in Eddyville, Fairfield, Washington, Wellsburg, and Waterloo; all in Iowa. Finally, in August 1949, the family moved to Fresno, California.
Marion graduated from Fresno State College with a BA in Accounting and went to work for the firm of Sims & Stoughton in October 1952. In 1979, Marion became a partner in Ernst & Whinney from which he retired in 1989 after 37 years as a Certified Public Accountant.
In 1953, while part of the First Presbyterian Church bowling team at the Fresno Palace Bowling Arena, Marion met Joan Willis, the love of his life. Apart for two years during Marion's army service in Japan, Joan and Marion were married June 24, 1956; and, in 1963, Marion and Joan acquired "The Lazy DH Ranch": a residence and 10 acres of permanent pasture where they raised their family with cattle and horses and a country lifestyle.
During their marriage, they loved to travel the Mississippi River, Columbia River, and the east coast by steamboat. They rode bicycle tours in Vermont, Louisiana, North Carolina, and northern Sierras. Family trips took them down the California coast visiting the California missions. Many memories were created over the years while vacationing at the Truckee family cabin.
Marion is survived by his wife Joan; sons Douglas Marion Den Hartog Sr. and Marshall Wayne Den Hartog; daughter Marguerite Joan (Den Hartog) McAfee; their three spouses; twelve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at the New Hope Community Church on Friday, February 24, 2023, starting at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow at the church.
