With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Battalion Chief Tony Ray Garrison, affectionately known as "Bones" or "G," who left this world far too soon on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the age of 51. Tony was born on November 1, 1972, in Asheville, North Carolina, and he dedicated his life to serving others with bravery, humility, and an unwavering love for his community.
Tony's journey was marked by a profound commitment to his calling as a firefighter. Serving as a Battalion Chief with the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, his leadership and courage were exemplified through countless acts of heroism. Tragically, Tony succumbed to injuries sustained while selflessly assisting during Hurricane Helene in Fairview, North Carolina, embodying the very spirit of sacrifice and dedication that defined his life.
Beyond his career, Tony was a man of many passions. He found solace in the art of woodworking, tranquility in fishing, and joy in creating cherished memories with his beloved family. Known for his humility and warmth, Tony's greatest love was the time spent with his family-his loving wife of 28 years, Mary Chantelle Garrison, his daughter Hannah Sherie Garrison, and his son Dylan Chase Garrison, all of Fairview, North Carolina.
Tony's legacy is carried forth by his devoted mother, Martha Marie Garrison of Fairview, North Carolina; and his sister, Annette Branks (Ricky) of Arden, North Carolina; along with his sister-in-law, Brandy Willard (Gary) of Candler, North Carolina. His nephews, Chris Branks, Cody Branks, Tyler Willard, and Dalton Willard; and great-nephews, Greyson Willard, and Nathan Willard, will forever remember him as an inspirational figure. Tony also leaves behind his father-in-law, Robert "Bobby" Burgess, and a vast network of friends and colleagues, including his extended Fairview Volunteer Fire Department family.
Preceded in death by his father, Arthur "Ray" Garrison; mother-in-law, Nancy Burgess; and his nephew Brandon Ruppe, who tragically succumbed to injuries alongside Tony, he is now reunited with them in peace.
Tony's influence reached beyond his immediate circle, he also volunteered with the Garren Creek Fire Department, served as a member of the Buncombe County Task Force, had worked with the U.S. Forest Service, and shared his knowledge as an instructor at A-B Tech in Asheville.
