It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved grandfather, father, and husband, Benjamin Colunga. Benjamin,77, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, with his family by his side.
Benjamin was born on March 31,1947, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. For many years he moved between Mexico and the US working to provide a better life for his family. With his loving wife, Cirila Colunga, by his side, they made Jourdanton their home. Together, they dedicated their lives to working relentlessly to raise their 5 children and instilling the values of hard work, ambition and education.
The most tremendous joys for Benjamin were spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, listening to music and crafting with his hands. He began working at the young age of 8 and up until about a week before his passing he could be seen working outside with joy in his heart. The countless hours he spent painting, remodeling, building, mowing, and planning his next job filled his life with purpose. He treasured the many memories he made at his places of employment and with the many clients who kept him busy.
Benjamin Colunga is preceded in death by his mother María de la Luz Colunga, brother Juan Colunga and sister Teresa Escalante.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Cirila Colunga; his only beloved son David Colunga (wife Shannon Colunga), four beautiful daughters: Thanya Williams, Luz Zuniga (husband Kody Zuniga), Isabel Colunga (husband Fernando Tamez), and Jazmin Bucher (husband Michael Bucher). He leaves behind 8 precious grandchildren: Benicio Colunga, Olivia Colunga, Chloe Williams, Mia Williams, Lila Zuniga, Adrian Mendez, Sofia Tamez and Tyler Bucher.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Hurley Funeral Home from 3:00pm- 9:00pm, with a rosary beginning at 7:00 pm. Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at St. Matthews Catholic Church at 11:30 am, with a burial to follow at San Jose Cemetery in Jourdanton. Please join us for a small reception following the burial at St. Matthew's Parish Hall.
