He graduated from Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 4 years. After serving on the flight line for 3 years, Ben suffered severe hearing loss, and finished his military service working in the communications division. After 7 years at Miller Intermediate, Ben became Assistant Principal at George Thompson Middle School in Pasadena, Texas. In 1981, he was named principal of Jackson Intermediate School, where he served until his retirement from education in 1991.

An accomplished artist, Ben was named the Centennial Artist for the city of Pearland in 1994 with the original painting hanging prominently at City Hall.
