On October 28, 1946, the late Willie Edward Harper and Dorothy Lee Harper welcomed their tenth child, Benny C. Harper, Sr. Born in Thomasville, North Carolina, Benny was a lifelong friend and brother to each of his fifteen siblings. He received his early education at Church Street School and later earned a Bachelor's and a Master's degree during his military career.
While at Church St. School, Benny met his future wife, Mary Worthy. Upon graduation, they transitioned from "going steady" to newlyweds in 1968. Throughout the 55 years of this beautiful union, Benny was a devoted husband, father, confidant, best friend, and provider to his wife and two children, Benny Jr. and Caroline.
His unwavering faith, pursuit of knowledge, and commitment to personal growth guided him through a distinguished career in the United States Air Force that spanned over 30 years. From his nomination for "Outstanding Airman of the Year" at the beginning of his career, to earning his final rank of Chief Master Seargeant (CMSGT), bestowed to only 1% of enlisted Air Force personnel, Benny's leadership embodied integrity, service, and excellence.
Benny was a member of St. John AME Zion Church where he formally served on the Steward Board, President of the Men's Booster Ministry, and cook for the Men's Ministry. At the District level, Benny served as former Vice President of the Winston-Salem District Men's Booster Ministry.
In his spare time, Benny thoroughly enjoyed spending time at the beach, listening to oldie goldies, grilling, and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. Beyond his siblings, Benny maintained lasting relationships with his two closest friends, David Kendle and Bobby Gainey.
On November 24, 2023, the Lord saw fit to call Benny home to his eternal rest. To cherish his legacy, Benny leaves his beloved wife, Mary Harper; children, Benny C. Harper, Jr. and Dr. Caroline Harper; granddaughter, Nikie Turner; beloved brothers and sisters, Erma Jean Childers, Joe (Woodie) Harper, William Harper, Ralph (Fannie) Harper, Avis Renwrick, Kitty Stephens, Edith (Larry) Kirby, Ann Leak, Leonard (Janice) Harper, and John Harper; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
