Benny Joe Matthey, 90, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A man of deep faith, gentle humor, and quiet generosity, Benny spent most of his life living by example-devoted to his family, his work, and his community.
Born on July 26, 1934 in Jarvisville, WV, Benny was raised with strong values that shaped the life he lived: love for God, a strong work ethic, and unwavering kindness. He briefly lived in Huntsville, Alabama, but his roots were planted deeply in the places and people he loved most in WV.
Benny found joy in the simple but meaningful things: farming, helping others, working with his hands, and sharing time with his family. He was active in the United Methodist Men's Association and a proud member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). After retirement, he continued serving others through his volunteer work at United Hospital Center.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Neta Matthey. They were married for over 50 years before her passing in 2009. Also preceding him in death were three brothers and two sisters.
Benny is survived by his devoted son, Michael Matthey, and his wife, Tina Hinerman-Matthey. He leaves behind three grandchildren who adored him: Brittney Boehm (and husband Dylan), Zachary Matthey (and wife Bayley), and Parker Matthey. He recently became a proud great-grandfather to Clay Matthey and Miles Boehm.
Benny is also survived by two brothers: Bernard "Bunny" Matthey and wife, Diane of Clarksburg and David Matthey of Pensacola, Florida. Also surviving are in-laws, Nancy Matthey, Joe and Carolyn Green and Barbara Myers, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Benny Joe Matthey will be remembered as a kind soul with a quick wit, a generous spirit, and a heart firmly rooted in faith and family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 with Reverend Steve Engle and Steve Hinerman presiding. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
