Napoleon, Michigan - Berna Carol Boyd, a radiant soul whose light touched countless lives, peacefully departed this world on August 5th, 2023, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, with her loving family at her side. Born on April 2, 1949, in Pomona, California, Berna's journey through life was marked by her unwavering devotion to her family, her passion for her career, and her commitment to making a positive impact on the world around her. Throughout her life, Berna was a woman of immense accomplishments and passions that filled her days with joy and excitement. Beyond her successful career as a Health Physics Technician, she embraced hobbies that reflected her zest for life. Berna had an unwavering love for sailing and traveling, finding solace and adventure on the open waters and in exploring new places. Her creative spirit found expression in collecting art and crafting, including stained glass, gemstone creations, and pottery, leaving behind exquisite pieces that reflect her talent and dedication. Berna's nurturing spirit extended to all she encountered, creating a circle of warmth that enveloped her friends and colleagues. Her memory will be forever cherished by those who were fortunate to know her. She was preceded in life by her parents, George and Berna Jochem of Pomona, California, and her brother, Neil Jochem of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Berna's journey into eternity was also joined by her grandson, Bentley Kalen McDonald of Cato, Wisconsin, whose memory remains etched in the hearts of her loved ones. Additionally, she shared a profound connection with her life partner's mother, Sandra (Sandy) Towle. Berna leaves behind a trail of cherished memories for her beloved life partner, Kalen Towle, and his father, Gordon Towle, of Napoleon, Michigan. Her daughter, Cindy Smith of Napolean, Michigan, were recipients of her boundless love, as were her grandchildren: Brandon Smith of Denver, Colorado; Ashley Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; Caitlyn Smith of Scottsdale, Arizona; and the late Bentley Kalen McDonald of Cato, Wisconsin. Berna's son, Brian, and his wife, Dana McDonald, and their children, Connor and Macy McDonald of Cato, Wisconsin, held a special place in her heart. A celebration of Berna's life will take place in Hawaii. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to SUDC, a cause close to Berna's heart. A special celebration of Berna's life will also be held at one of her favorite places in Hawaii. Her remains will be cast to the sea in a traditional Hawaiian ceremony off Diamond Head, Oahu, where the elements she cherished will embrace her once more. The family will share details of the upcoming ceremony with all who wish to attend, ensuring that her memory continues to bring people together in unity and love. As we bid farewell to Berna Carol Boyd, we honor the imprint she left on our lives. Her love, dedication, and kindness continue to inspire us all. Though she has departed this world, her memory will forever remain a beacon of light, guiding us through the darkness.
