Bernadine "Berny" G. Ostopchik (nee Kopkowski), age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility in Naperville, IL. Born on February 27, 1937, in Chicago, Berny was the daughter of the late Ignatius and Stella Kopkowski (nee Gorka).
Berny was the beloved wife of the late William L. Snyder and the late Frank H. Ostopchik; loving mother of Lorel (Jay) Snyder, Tammy (Bob) Durante, Dawn Conlin, and William (Liz) Snyder; adored grandmother of Lauren (Kevin) Conlin, Thomas (Emily) Conlin, Jenna Durante, and Dana Durante; and cherished great-grandmother of Brooks and Morgan.
She was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, Agnes (Ted) Ryczek, Ralph (Esther) Kopkowski, and Edward (Dorothy) Kopkowski. Berny was also a fond sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, great-great aunt, and friend to many.
Berny grew up in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood and was a proud graduate of Tuley High School. She later moved to Elmhurst, IL, where she raised her family and attended Visitation Catholic Church.
First and foremost a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Berny also spent more than 25 years as an accounts payable clerk at Jewel-Osco's corporate offices in Melrose Park, IL. Outside of work, she was known for her love of entertaining, regularly hosting family and friends for delicious meals and lively gatherings.
After retiring from Jewel-Osco in 1995, Berny relocated to Sun City, AZ, where she embraced an active lifestyle filled with travel, cruising, and attending the theater with friends. A talented ceramics painter and avid game enthusiast, she especially enjoyed playing cards, board games, Mahjong, and Mexican Train.
In 2023, Berny returned to the west suburbs to be closer to her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Berny's family is eternally grateful to her care team at Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility and Angel's Grace Hospice for their exceptional and compassionate care in her final months.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025, at Visitation Catholic Church, 779 S. York Street, Elmhurst, IL 60126, (630) 834-6700.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following the visitation at 10:00 a.m.
Inurnment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
