Hogansburg: Bernard Joseph Bero, aged 96, of Pearl St. Hogansburg passed away at home on Sunday, September 28, 2025, after a period of declining health. Bernard was born on April 27, 1929, in Hogansburg to Daniel and Catherine (Savage) Bero. He was married to Ann Bridget (Hammill) on April 19, 1971, at St. Patrick's Church in Hogansburg. Ann predeceased him in 2003.
Bernard graduated as valedictorian of Bombay High School class of 1946 and pursued his degree in Electrical Engineering at Clarkson University graduating in 1951. He was a member of Clarkson ROTC. He worked at Boeing Corporation in Seattle, WA for a number of years prior to returning to the North Country. He worked as an electrician and painter as well as caretaker for St. Patrick's Church after returning home and starting a family. He served for many years on the Parish Council and Board of Trustees for St. Patrick's parish. He was an avid reader, gardener and could fix just about anything. He was known for his humor and quick wit which he maintained through his final days.
He is survived by his daughters - Dr. Florence C. Bero and husband Matthew Arnold of Potsdam and Dr. Eva M. Bero of Massena/Worcester, MA. He is also survived by his brother and sister's in-law Julia and David Dishaw, Debra Hammill, Mary T Hammill all of Rooseveltown and many nieces and nephews.
Bernard is predeceased by his wife, Ann (Hammill) Bero, brothers Harold (Cecil) Bero, Daniel (Elizabeth) Bero, Albert (Ruth) Bero, Dr. George (Eileen) Bero, James Bero and William "Buddy" Bero as well as brother and sister in-laws Joyce (Patrick) Cavanaugh, Florence (Alex) Gabri, Albert "Brother" Hammill, William P. Hammill.
Family and friends may call at the Phillips Memorial Home on Thursday October 2 from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00am on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Sacred Heart Church in Massena. Burial will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Massena Public Library: massenapubliclibrary.org/donate-1/
