Bernard “BJ” Jackson Carter, 39, of Havaco, WV, left this world far too soon, probably still shaking his head at the state of it all. BJ passed away surrounded by love, laughter, and more family stories than could ever fit into one lifetime. Born and raised in Havaco, BJ was known for his big heart, quick wit, and the remarkable ability to make everyone around him laugh. Whether he was cracking a joke, lending a hand, or turning an ordinary day into an adventure, BJ made sure life around him was never dull. He is preceded in death by his father Jessie Carter; maternal grandparents Lois and Bernard Addair; paternal grandparents Joann and Jackson Carter; uncles Wayne Carter, Bill Carter, and James Addair; and aunts Judy Carter, Sandy Carter, and Tammy Hamilton. We are certain they were all there to greet him, probably arguing over who got to hug him first. BJ is survived by his devoted mother Bernice “Lee” Carter of the home; sisters Jessica (Kevin) Potter of Havaco, WV, and April (Bradley) Muncy of Welch, WV; and his beloved nieces Shiann Carter, Bailee Muncy, and Addison Muncy, who were the lights of his life and his favorite people to spoil rotten. He is also survived by uncle Ronnie Hamilton of Gary, WV; aunts Jean (James) Overstreet of Gary, WV; Vivian (Ernie) Collins of Gary, WV; Karen Addair of Gary, WV; Diann (Tony) Bailey of Texas; Karen Addair of Coalwood, WV; and Dean (Mike) Hatfield of Havaco, WV, who will be officiating his service with the same mix of love and sass that BJ always appreciated. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, countless friends, and more memories than anyone could ever count. BJ’s sense of humor, loyalty, and ability to brighten a room will be deeply missed, but we will honor him the best way we know how: by laughing through the tears, sharing stories, and keeping his spirit alive in every joke told and every act of kindness done in his name. Funeral services will be held at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, WV, on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 11:00 AM with visitation for family and friends beginning at 10:00-11:00, prior to the service. Services will be officiated by his aunt Dean Hatfield. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share a funny story about BJ, do something kind for someone else, or just take a moment to laugh today, because that is exactly what he would want. Rest easy, BJ. Heaven just got a little louder and a lot more fun.
