Bernard Stein Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Segal Funeral Home - Beth David Chapel - Tampa on Feb. 3, 2026.
Bernard David Stein, 82, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on 1/31/2026 after a valiant two-plus-year battle with brain cancer.

Born on 8/29/1943 to parents Milton and Betty Stein in Kankakee, Illinois, where his father was stationed during World War II, he spent his childhood and teenage years growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his big sister Frannie.

Bernie earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also attended medical school, after which he completed a residency in Radiology at The Ohio State University.

Following two years practicing radiology in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he fulfilled his commitment to the United States Air Force, he settled with his wife and family in Tampa, Florida, forever referred to by Bernie as "Paradise". He spent the next 48 years providing extraordinary intellectual, physical, and emotional medical care to the Tampa Bay Area community. He was always available and always went beyond the extra mile for his patients, community, friends, and family, touching many people along the way.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sharon Arlene, his children, son Jeffrey and wife Jennifer, daughter Lauren and husband Andy Goldman, and three beloved grandchildren, Jake, Ella, and Lexi.

Bernie was known throughout the community for his extremely hard work and dedication to his profession, his unique ability to provide guidance through a special combination of knowledge and tenderness, his love of golf and time spent with his crew at Palma Ceia Country Club, and, above all, his heartfelt and unwavering dedication and devotion to his family.

He will be dearly missed, always.

Graveside memorial service will be held at 2 pm this Friday, February 6th, at Beth Israel Cemetery, 602 W Indiana Ave. in Tampa. Following the services, the family will be receiving guests at their home anytime after 4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Moffitt Cancer Center in honor of Dr. Patrick Grogan.

Special thanks to Drs. Morris Hanan and David Halpern for their supportive care.

For over 50 years, I have had, and will continue to have, a deep relationship with the Stein family here in Tampa. Lucky Stein, my nickname for Bernie, has been the longest close friend I have had. He was a tremendous athlete and I enjoyed competing with him and against him in multiple sports. He was the "go to guy " for providing guidance to friends and even acquaintances to have medical questions answered. When he obtained new radiology equipment at Memorial Hospital, I was his "guinea pig" for completing the new equipment process. He carried me through to the club doubles Championship at Palma Ceia in 1989 after he won the singles Championship a few years before. We attended many sporting, family, golf trip and other memorable activities. He and Sharon honored me by asking me to perform the wedding service for their daughter, Lauren, and Andy Goldman. The Mitzvah that I give to Bernie is to mention his name as often as I can to keep his memory alive for as long as I am around. Love Ya, Lucky.

Sharon, I am very sorry for your loss. It has been a long time since I saw you and Bernie. Unfortunately I had lost contact with all of my friends in Tampa since I retired. Please stay in touch if you wish. Doug and Maureen informed me of his passing. Thinking of you

We had the good fortune of knowing Bernie and Sharon as well as Lauren and Jeff for over 50 years. Bernie was a great father always coaching the kids and any stray child who needed help learning for many years. He was the happiest person I know and his joy spread throughout the community. All Bernie stories you will hear are of joy and happiness. We will miss him greatly.
