Bernice "Boo" Chavoustie, 99, died Sunday, November 9, 2025, at her home in Kill Devil Hills, NC.
Born in New York City (The Bronx), on June 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy and Harry Godowitz and often spoke of what it was like to grow up in the city during The Great Depression.
Boo graduated from Fordham Hospital in Flushing, NY, as an RN in 1947. She devoted nearly four decades to caring for others before retiring in 1986. Following retirement, she and her beloved husband, Robert, embraced a life of world travel and adventure. Despite Robert's years in the Navy and his insistence that he was "done with boats," Boo even convinced him to enjoy cruising, during which they saw everything from Alaskan glaciers to the wonders of Japan, Russia, China, and many European countries.
She once described meeting the love of her life as, "I looked across the room, and saw the most handsome man I had ever seen." Never afraid of challenges or adventure, she went hang-gliding at 65, skydiving at 70, and hot-air ballooning at 80, where she was cheered on by her husband, who kept his own feet firmly on the ground! Up until she was 94, she was a loyal weekly step-aerobics participant at the local Senior Center, and for many years previously had entered her quilts and crochet blankets into local competitions. She passed on her deep love of reading murder mysteries and regency novels to her daughter and granddaughter, along with her recipes for zucchini and fig bread. She was stubborn, practical, loving, and kind. The type of person who believed in doing what was needed because it was her duty, and did not expect any fanfare because of it.
She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Robert, and a son, Chris. She is survived by her daughter, Terry (Bob) of Kill Devil Hills; her son, Owen (Kathy) of Mechanicsville, VA; and her beloved granddaughter, Khara of Cary, NC.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no local service. She will be interred next to her husband at Albert G. Horton Jr Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA, with military honors at a later date.
