Bernice King Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Walker Funeral Service and Chapel, Inc. - Champaign on Feb. 16, 2026.
Evangelist Bernice Elaine King, 73, peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on February 8, 2026, in Peoria. Born on April 1, 1952, in Blue Mountain, she was the cherished daughter of the late Robert L. King and Edwinna King.

Bernice's life was a testament to love, service, and unwavering faith. She dedicated 12 years of service as a bus driver for Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity (PCCEO), where she touched the lives of countless children, ensuring their safety and happiness on their daily journeys. She also faithfully served as a bus driver for City Link in Peoria, continuing her commitment to caring for and transporting children safely.

Her compassion and quick action extended beyond her profession. Bernice was honored by the American Red Cross for saving the life of a 10-month-old baby boy-an act that reflected her courage and selflessness. She also received an Honorary Citizen Award presented by President Bill Clinton in recognition of her outstanding service and impact.

A devoted woman of God, Bernice was a faithful member of Gospel Experience Church in Peoria and actively participated in Agape Assembly Ministries in Brunswick. She found great joy in worship, fellowship, and spending time in the House of the Lord. In recognition of her tireless dedication to her community, she was also awarded the "Key to the City" from Peoria, Illinois.

Bernice's legacy lives on through her loving family. She leaves to cherish her memory her three beloved children: Gregory King of Jacksonville; Purnell Pinkney Jr.; and Araka Pinkney, both of Peoria; her cherished daughter-in-love, Meschelle Holmes of Augusta; four brothers, Frank (Annette) King, Charlie (Pearl) King, Willie King, and Elvin Jones; and two sisters, Gladys Carpenter and Joyce King.

She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Rashannon (Alex), RaShika, Tara, Jitendra, Kuaneisha, Jyneisha, Tierra, JaKazah, Gregory Jr., Louis Jr., Kariya, and Serenity, a loving great-grandmother to eleven, and great-great-grandmother to one, all of whom were the light of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert R. King; and her sons, Steven and Stethan. Though she endured profound loss, her steadfast faith and radiant spirit remained a source of strength and inspiration to all who knew her.
