Bernice was born on August 1, 1942 in Edgar, daughter of the late Charles and Loretta (Rogstad) Schreiner. She was united in marriage to Eugene Lake on October 6, 1962 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church. They were married for 57 years when Eugene passed away in 2019. Besides her job as a wife and mother, Bernice was employed at AMS Bowfishing in Stratford.

She was a member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgar.

Bernice found great joy in the outdoors, whether she was cutting firewood, birdwatching, or tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She had a love for country music and a passion for baking, and she cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. Bernice also enjoyed the occasional visit to the casino, always hopeful for a lucky win. At home, she took comfort in the companionship of her beloved cats, DJ and Duchess, who were always by her side.

Bernice will be forever loved and cherished in the hearts of her children: Michael (Bernice) Lake of Edgar, Russell (Laura) Lake of Stratford, Vicki (Robert) Hughes of Stratford, Terrence (Ann) Lake of Birnamwood, Robin (Jessica Johnson) Lake of Wausau and Melissa (Brad) Hanke of Athens; her grandchildren: Rebecca (Charlie) Kuhnmuench, Eric Lake, Danielle (Aaryn) Martyn, Joshua Lake, Jessica (Ryan Polzin) Lake, Jeremy (fiancé, Mariah Olson) Lake, Jacob, Derek, and Colin Hughes, Tianna (Tyler) Voda, Cole and Gracie Lake, Bailey, Riley, and Easton Hanke, Destiny Murphy and Emma Johnson; and her great-grandchildren, Elsa, Eloise, Jaxon, Ava, Callan, Miles, Olivia, and Waylon. She is further survived by her siblings, Leroy (Doreen) Riehle, Bernadine (Kenny) Pollack, Dave (Judy) Weix, and Virgil (Patricia) Schreiner; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann and Wanda Schreiner, Charlene (Jerry) Imhoff, and Darlene (Danny) Stencil; brothers-in-law, Norbert (Janet) Lake, Leander Lake, Glen (Martha) Lake, and Gary (Bonnie) Lake along with many other relatives and friends.

She was welcomed into eternal rest by her parents, Charles and Loretta Schreiner; her husband, Eugene Lake; a son, William Lake; a daughter, Kelly in infancy; siblings, Francis Schreiner, Ramona (Chip) Jirschele, Mike (Virginia) Pribula and Vernell Schreiner; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lawrence Jr. and Mary, both in infancy.
