Bernice Szmutko, (née Kordys) age 87 of Chillicothe, IL, formerly of Gary, IN, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2024.
Bernice was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was preceded in death by her husband John Szmutko and grandson Cullen Szmutko.
She is survived by four children, Robert (Kathy) Szmutko of Rochester, MN, Laura (Scott) Vail of Phoenix, AZ, Debbie Kilmurry of LaVista, NE and Tammy (Bryan) Nelson of Chillicothe, IL; eight grandchildren, Morgan (Brent) Gothmann, Matthew Vail, Megan (Toby) Rasmussen, Kelli (Joe) Autry, Courtney (Cody) Lang-Kipp, Marissa (James) Myres, Brad (Morgan) Nelson, Zach (Lauren) Nelson and 15 great grandchildren, Nora, Miles, Lainey, Gavin, Eleanor, Mabel, Amelia, Makenzie, Olivia, Everly, Madalyn, Jacob, Emma, Ellie, and Maddux. Bernice is survived by sisters, Lillian (Armand) Lopez, Shirley (late Tom) Bobin and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, John and Mary Kordys; her sisters, Veronica (Jake) Dobis, Helen (Walter) Korotky, and her brothers Anthony (Catherine), Joseph (Jennie), John (Audrey), Leonard (Diane) and Stanley Kordys.
Bernice was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, a former parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a graduate of Horace Mann High School.
Per Bernice's wishes, cremation was chosen. Weber-Hurd Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 10:30am at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, 801 W. 73rd Ave., Merrillville, IN 46410.
