Berta Ezell (Brown) Abbe, age 97, of Lubbock, Texas and formerly of Morton, Texas passed from this life to her eternal reward on Sunday, December 17, 2023 in Lubbock. She was born June 28, 1926 in Littlefield, Texas to Thomas Garland and Gladys (Jackson) Brown.
Berta was number eight of eleven children in her family. She grew up in Morton, Tx working alongside her siblings on the farm, hoeing and pulling cotton. She graduated from Morton High School in 1943 and then married the love of her life, Mitchell Lee Abbe, on January 22, 1944 and they had 60 wonderful years together until his death in 2004. Their first child, Mayland, was the first baby born at the new Cochran Memorial Hospital in Morton in August 1947. They moved to Plainview to farm and they added another two sons, Lamell and Michael. And then they were blessed with a daughter, Rhonda, and their family was complete. They moved back to Morton in 1961 where they farmed and Mitchell was a spray pilot and also taught people to fly, including Berta. She loved telling people about her experiences flying. She was a homemaker, enjoying cooking and sewing. She made most of the family's clothes for a lot of years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for a cotton broker for a while and then she worked as an insurance clerk at the hospital for about five years.
Berta was a devoted member of the Church of Christ, teaching Bible classes to the kids. She enjoyed reading and studying her Bible. She attended Kings Ridge Church of Christ in Lubbock.
Berta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter and her brothers, Granville Brown, Ira Brown, Leonard Brown, Herman Brown and her sisters, Irene Pederson, Opal Hair, Minnie Mae Fulton, Bonnie Blackstone, and Hallie Bennett.
She is survived by her sons, Mayland and wife Mary of Amarillo, Lamell and wife Linda of Lubbock, and Mike and wife Allene of Lubbock, a sister, Nell Coats of Granbury, TX, grandchildren Tara Myers, Matt Abbe, Mindy Aycock, Aaron Abbe, Geoff Abbe, Brian Bird, and Eric Abbe. She is also survived by 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
