Berta Evans Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home - Paris on Jan. 16, 2026.
In Loving Memory of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many, Berta 'Jean' Evans, Huett, July 10, 1931 – January 14, 2026, born in Dallas, Texas.

Our mother Jean lived a rich life, passing away at 94 years old peacefully in hospice in her daughter & son-in-law, Cynthia and Craig Tim's home in Paris, Texas, January 14, 2026.

Jean grew up in the Dallas and Highland Park area. As a youngster she learned various business skills working in her parents grocery stores. Desiring to increase these skills, Jean attended and received a business administrative secretarial certification from 'Draughn's Practical Business School, which used to be in downtown Dallas, on the corner of Main and Akard. Mom was always proficient in typing, shorthand and accounting. Her first job was as a secretary to top executives with Lone Star Gas at their downtown Dallas location.

One pivotal day while on her lunch break, a William 'Bill' H. Huett happened to be downtown on business. While driving, he laid eyes upon this beautiful young woman as she crossed the street in front of him. 'Dad' was immediately smitten, quickly parked and followed her into the old Woolsworth's. He sat next to her at the lunch counter and began a conversation with her. She too was smitten and they would soon become happily married. Eventually having their two children, Charles Dean Huett and Cynthia Jean Rice-Tims, both of Dallas. All of their lives together, they remained happily married and role models for their children. Our mother was able to use her business school acumen to assist her husband Bill in his dreams and career pursuits, eventually becoming very successful. Dad and mom's hard work paid off, building their beautiful dream home near White Rock Lake, where mom continued to raise her children after Bill passed. Every year our parents would take a month long vacation with us, driving to every historic highpoint, or point of interest or many national parks in the South and Midwest as well as Texas and Mexico. Dad would plot out the trips and mom would study our old road atlas, choosing those memorable points of interest.

Our mother and father were both active followers of Jesus Christ, and our dad was a great Christian father and leader in our home. They would teach us Bible stories, have us memorize scripture and eventually lead us to the Lord as our Savior. Our family were longtime members of Lakewood Baptist Church, and were there every time the doors were open. They volunteered together in the children's programs as well as assisting in all school activities as we were growing up. We are grateful to be raised in a home with a mother and father that helped form a strong Christian foundation in us.

All of her life, Mom remained a truly meek and gentle follower of Christ, and was known as a peacemaker, even after our father, Bill Huett died. Mom eventually remarried and moved to Mckinney, Texas where she discovered her passions as a respiratory therapist at Collin Memorial Hospital, now Baylor Scott and White. She began in the late 1980's working until the late 1990's. Mom was a favorite of many doctors who would often request her services even on her days off. She was always happy to go, often working long hours anytime she was needed. She and her husband eventually retired to Windom, Texas where she became a volunteer in one of Windom's nursing homes, and took cross country trips with a local friend, while remaining active in her church and in Sunday school.

After her second husband Wendell Evans passed, and for more than ten years, our mother Jean discovered she had the wherewithal and strength to care for her large farm and ranch by herself. Until March 2020 and the beginning of Covid, when it became necessary that she move in with her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Craig Tims of Paris, where she was safe and loved, living there until she passed.

Truly our mother's greatest joy in life was visiting her son and daughter in the Dallas area for holidays, birthdays, and all the family's memorable dates. But even greater, she lived to spend time with her seven grandchildren. Our mother Jean dearly adored her grandchildren, making sure they all individually knew how much they were loved. But, Mom's truly happiest moments were when she was surrounded by her son's family in McKinney or her daughter's family in Flower Mound and later in Paris, during football season when the world stopped during her visits because her Dallas Cowboys were playing.

Our little mama was a loving mother to her children, Charles Huett and Cynthia Rice-Tims, and a cherished grandmother to Bill, Derrick, David and Dr. Christopher Rice, with granddaughters Heather, Hanna, and Halee Huett. And recently, she became a great grandmother to her two beloved great granddaughters, Naomi and Olivia Rice, children of grandson David Rice and his wife, Cherish Rice of The Colony, Texas.

Berta 'Jean' Bedell, Huett, Evans is survived by her younger sister, Maryann Darr and her husband Paul Darr of Strawn, Texas.

Preceded in death are her parents, Charles and Mary Bedell of Dallas; brothers, Robert, Bert, Richard, and Bill Bedell, her beloved husband, William H. Huett, father to her children; and husband Wendell Evans.

Berta 'Jeans' Bedell, Huett, Evan's homegoing celebration will be officiated by Pastor Jerry Roberts, of All For Your Glory Church, on Friday, January 30,2026, at 1:00pm. The service will be held at Diamond H Event Center, 3536 US-82, Paris, TX 75462.

Following the service, graveside service will be at Evergreen Cemetery, 560 Evergreen St, Paris, TX 75460. Led by Minister Elaine Lett of North Richland Hills, Texas, a longtime family friend.

She is dearly missed, but we have certainty that our mother is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, no longer with pain or age, and forever rejoicing with many friends and family, all were there to welcome her into those Heavenly Gates of Glory.

Jean would hope all friends, family and those in attendance to join her one day, and if you have not received Jesus as your Savior, please read and take to heart her favorite scripture;

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Serving as Pallbearers are Charles D. Huett, G. Craig Tims, William A. Rice, II, Derrick M. Rice, David S. Rice, Dr. Christopher P. Rice. Honorary Pallbearer will be Scott Hommell.
