Berta Hinojosa Mata celebrated her 96th Birthday on September 27, 2022 and passed away peacefully on October 2, 2022 surrounded by her family and loved ones in her home in Crystal City, Texas.
Berta was our Reina, our Ama, our Corazon, and our Abuelita Preciosa! She was so beautiful and strong in her ways like a diamond that shined and sparkled everywhere she went. She leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and unity. She had Faith and Trust in God throughout her life. While holding on to her beautiful gold crucifix around her neck, hizo la señal de la cruz, lo beso y dijo, "Esta es lo que me ayudado a mi, esta Mi Cruz. Porque yo creo mucho en Dios."
On September 27, 1926, Berta Hinojosa was born in La Coste, Texas to Urbano and Hermila Flores Hinojosa. On April 3, 1948, she married Jesus Mata and together raised 15 children. As a family, the Mata's migrated from Texas to North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and California where they worked in the sugar beets, harvested potatoes, picked cucumbers, tomatoes, and strawberries.
Berta loved to make tortillas, tamales, and tacos, enjoyed embroidering and walking. She loved to play Mexican Bingo known as Loteria with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an expert that played to win both El Bingo and La Esquina. She was known for always playing her "lucky cards" (wink wink) and refusing to play for pennies and made us laugh especially when she called out the Booboo Lady. She believed that playing Bingo was God's recipe to keep her going.
She loved to go shopping at El JCPenny and La Bealls. She loved to watch La India Maria, Sabado Gigante, El Chavo del Ocho, all the Spanish novelas, and The Young and the Restless. She enjoyed playing the penny slots at the casinos and enjoyed listening to her cassettes and CDs marked BHM with nail polish. She listened to everything from Ramon Ayala to Los Tigres Del Norte for hours. She inspired us all and put us to shame with her fashionable wardrobe and her exercise routine especially with her 50 reps of leg raises. She challenged us all to do them before we went to bed.
Survivors include her children, Berta Ortiz (Jose) of Crystal City,TX, Rosalva Mata of Fayetteville, AK, Giermina 'Minnie' Mendez of Crystal City, TX, Angelica De Jesus (Reginaldo) of Diboll, TX, Lydia Mata of Grand Forks, ND, Carolina Jones (Patrick) of Minneapolis, MN, Sylvia Wolf of Grand Forks, ND, Jesus Mata III (Julie) of Franklin, IL, Adalia Sanchez (Robert) of Crystal City, TX, Juan Mata (Maggie) of Mekinock, ND, Roberto Mata (Anabelia) of Crystal City, TX, Elsa Mata (Julie) of Grand Forks, ND, and Armando Mata of Mekinock, ND; 57 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Gloria Atchison of Lytle, TX and Olga Lopez of La Coste,TX; as well as numerous loving relatives.

Thank you, Berta, for making your family, your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren your priority. We were all so blessed to have you for so many years. 96 Blessed Years! We will miss your humor, your advice, your laughter, your honesty, and your "I LUUUV YOUs". We will also miss you chewing your chicle and rolling it in your fingers, and we are saddened that we could not give it to you in your last days even though you asked for it over 10 times.
Rest in peace our beautiful angel, We Love You! Te Queremos Mucho Mucho! The Heart of the Mata Family is at peace knowing that Berta is resting in eternal light with Diosito in heaven.
Thank you for all the prayers, well wishes, and for all the love everyone has given the Hinojosa Mata Family during this difficult time.
