Bessie Marie Holmes, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was born on October 31, 1932, to Clarence "Red" and Ella Mae Johnson. She was the eldest of three children and was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, John Edward Johnson and Lena Deloris Christian.
On August 5, 1945, Bessie married the love of her life, Tommy D. Holmes. Together they shared 60 devoted years of marriage until Tommy's passing in 2005. Their life together was filled with love, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
Bessie worked for many years as a CNA at Bowling Green Medical Center, where she primarily served on the obstetrics floor. She took pride in caring for mothers and newborns, and her compassion touched countless families throughout her career.
She had a joyful spirit and a passion for collecting Precious Moments figurines. Visiting the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri became a treasured tradition. Even after relocating to Olathe, Kansas, following Tommy's death, she continued to collect figurines and porcelain dolls that brought her comfort and delight.
For the last four years of her life, Bessie resided at Nottingham Health & Rehabilitation in Olathe, where she was cherished by the staff. Her spirited personality and humor endeared her to everyone-many affectionately referred to her as "a pistol."
Bessie is survived by her children: Sharon Milligan (Gary), David Holmes (Libby), and Teena Hoops (Todd). She also leaves behind eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Bessie lived life on her own terms and left this world the same way-independent, strong-willed, and deeply loved. She will be profoundly missed by her family and all who were blessed to know her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Nottingham Health & Rehabilitation for their devoted care, and to the St. Croix Hospice nurses and staff for their kindness and support during her final months.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Fairview Cemetery #2. Arrangements are entrusted to J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapels.
