Bettie M. Colley

ROCKFORD – Bettie M. Colley, age 73, of Rockford and formerly of Chicago and Delkalb passed away peacefully Monday, October 6, 2025. Born in Rome, MS on December 5, 1951 to Tommy & Bettie Calvin (Ray). A proud activist and member of the Black Panther Party, Bettie was a strong believer in education and an advocate of changing the world. Elected first chairwoman of the Local School Council and co-chair of the Children First Initiative in partnership with Chicago Public Schools. Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend; she will remain forever in our hearts.

She is survived by her sons, John S. Colley and Jamal (Blanca) Calvin, 7 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; sisters, Liddie Williams and Tommie Calvin; brother, Anderson Hardman; numerous nieces & nephews and cousins; and beloved cat, Gizmo. She is predeceased by her daughter, Dalahn Colley; son, Vernon Thomas Colley; fathers of her children, John Colley and Vernon Jones; and grandson, Kal-el Sexton.

Services are Private. Cremation rites accorded. Christenson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Memorials to the family.
