Bettie Martineau Stradling was born May 26, 1943 in Colonia Chuichupa, Chihuahua, Mexico to Helen Hawkins and Bernard Edward Martineau. She was the fifth of eleven children.
When she was 7 years old, her family moved from Chuichupa to Colonia Juarez where she spent the next eleven years growing up, and graduating from Seminary and high school. When she was 18 years old, Bettie took a job as a governess and moved to the United States, Tucson, Arizona. While working there, she was able to attend classes at the University of Arizona in the evenings, but after a semester, she decided college was not for her. The family that she was working for then moved to Mesa and Bettie moved along with them.
From 1965-1967, Bettie served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Spanish American Mission, based in San Antonio, TX.
In December 1967, shortly after returning home to Mesa, AZ after her mission, Bettie met Marlo Brent Stradling. After dating for a few months, they were engaged. Bettie and Brent were married and sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on September 20, 1968. Together, they raised their four children in Mesa.
While her children were young, Bettie babysat for many families in her home. Then when her children all started attending school, she began working for Mesa Public Schools in the foodservice program. She spent almost 15 years serving lunch to students from 1985-2000. For several years during this time, Bettie also spent summers working at Toys, Books and Treasures, a second-hand retail store. Her job there included taking home all the jigsaw puzzles that would be brought in and putting them together to make sure they were complete before they could be returned to the store and sold. After leaving the school district, Bettie worked for six more years at Chandler Valley Hope Recovery Center, before retiring in 2006.
At that time, Bettie and Brent sold their home in Mesa and moved to St. George, Utah to care for Brent's mother. While living in St. George, Bettie enjoyed going for walks around her neighborhood and serving in the cafeteria in the St. George Temple.
In 2014, Brent's mother left St. George to move in with one of her daughters and Bettie and Brent moved north to Lehi, where Bettie spent the remainder of her years. While in Lehi, she and Brent had the opportunity to complete a service mission at Lindon Home Storage Center from 2016 to 2020.
Bettie was a life-long faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many callings, including the Ward Primary presidency, Activity Days leader, and as a visiting teacher and ministering sister. But one of her most favorite callings was the many years she served as a Cub Scout Leader where she was awarded a Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America for her outstanding service.
Bettie loved to scrapbook and journal. She also loved crafting and she made themed decorations for each month and season of the year. You could frequently find her working on a puzzle. She enjoyed chocolate, especially mint, and the grandkids always knew that she kept a stash and could be sweet-talked into sharing a treat with them.
Bettie is survived by her husband, Brent, her children Marlo (Brenda), Vonalin (Tim), Eric (Becca), and Kayla (Kent), her sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, three brothers, Jess, Laurie and Albert, and one sister, Ruth. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Marie and Karma, and four brothers, JB, David, Bill and Vonalen.
Services will be held Monday, March 24th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 1149 N 300 W, Lehi, UT
