Betty Lou Hochuli (Hume), age 93, formerly from Syosset and Hampton Bays, NY, passed away on June 25, 2025
Born February 24, 1932, in Richmond Hill, NY. Survived by her son Jon (Donna Ortel), daughters Laura Kavanagh (Donald) and Barbara English (Richard), Grandchildren Eriq Hochuli ( Melissa Tate), Joseph Kavanagh (Alexandra Jones), John Kavanagh, Ashley Lindroth ( Daniel), Andrew English (Teresa Amore), James English. Also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband of 72 years, John Henry Hochuli, Jr, and her brother Edward Hume.
Betty grew up in Richmond Hill, NY, with her parents, Charles and Emma Hume, and younger brother Edward. Betty was an athlete. She was a cheerleader and played on the girls; basketball team for Richmond Hill High School. She met the love of her life, John Hochuli, at Jan's Ice Cream Parlor. They were married on November 9, 1952.
Early in their marriage, they lived in Rhode Island while her husband was in the Navy. They moved to Glendale, NY, where they had John and Laura. Then onto Syosset, where Barbara was born. Betty was a stay-at-home "super" mom. She planned the best Birthday parties and always hosted all the main holidays.
Betty volunteered at the Berry Hill Elementary School library and was an active member at Faith Lutheran Church in Syosset, NY. She was also a member of W.E.L.C.A.. She worked at Macy's and Donna Lee's Potpourri. She was an avid bowler, tennis player, golfer, and reader. When Betty was in her 50s, she participated in an Outward Bound experience down in North Carolina. She said it was one of the best things she had ever done and offered this trip to all of her children and nephews. She was a true believer in
being the best person you could be.
Not only was Betty a super mom, but she was also an outstanding grandmother. Her grandchildren just adored her. She always let each child be an individual. She was always encouraging and always loving. She never held back on a good sword fight, a climb in a tree, a push in the swimming pool, a throw of a napkin, or a great big hug. Betty also had a huge heart for her great-grandchildren. She loved a good cuddle from them. She even liked playing Bingo and other games with them. Betty was a lover of all animals. She was so happy to have lunch with her favorite dog, Cooper.
We will miss her dearly, but now she is with the love of her life. RIP
