Carthage - Betty Jean Matice, 75, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, while at Carthage Area Hospital.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Lundy Funeral Home, located at 500 State Street in Carthage, NY 13619. A memorial service will follow the calling hours at 4:00 pm in the Lundy Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Canon Samuel P. Lundy officiating. Following the service, the family will be holding a Celebration of Life at the Carthage VFW, Dionne-Rumble Post 7227. A burial will take place in the spring, to be announced at a later date.
Betty was born on February 7, 1950, in Harrisville, NY to the late Milton and Mary Jane (Weekes) Cowles. She attended Harrisville Central School. Betty worked a variety of jobs in the North Country, including at USA Plywood, Fort Drum as a custodian, Long Branch Saloon as a bartender, Ames Department Store at the service desk, and most recently, as the switchboard operator at Carthage Area Hospital.
Betty married Terry Matice on July 8, 1967. Terry passed away on December 23, 1993. Betty and her long-time companion Joseph Vaccaro spent many years together before his passing in 2010.
She enjoyed reading, doing word searches, playing cards, going bowling, playing shuffleboard, and going to the casinos. She was a Communicate of St. James Church. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Terrie (Kevin) Wood, and Tina (Mark) Woodfolk; her grandchildren, Kevin (Melissa) Wood, Thomas (Brittany) Wood, and Lauren Woodfolk; her great-grandchildren, Adrienne, Adalynn, Aryn, Aubryana, Kohen, and Harper Jones; her siblings, Milton "Pete" & Dianne Cowles, Jr., Wedgefield, South Carolina, Linda Lee & Larry Paro, Maryland, Mary Louise & Roy "Butch" Beirman, Black River, Donna & Joe McMahon, Clayton, North Carolina, Joseph & Lori Cowles, Colton, New York, Valerie (Allen) Windover, King George, Virginia, and Lisa (Skip) Wensel, Warren, Ohio,; and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, Milton and Mary Jane; her husband, Terry Matice; her best friend and companion, Joseph Vaccaro; and her sister, Nancy (Wesley) Clyde.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Betty’s memory be made to the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation.
