Betty Jane Ellis, 96, of Eugene, Oregon, passed away on July 1, 2025, three weeks before her 97th birthday. She was born on July 19, 1928, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Alby Raymond Robertson and Janie Violet Troupe Robertson.
After graduating from Aquinas Academy for Girls in Tacoma, Betty pursued her lifelong passions of art and music through private classes and lectures. She painted for loved ones and sang in choirs throughout nearly her entire life-bringing joy and connection wherever she went.
Betty worked at several Eugene businesses, including Frager's Clothing Store. She later assisted in managing Kennell-Ellis Photography Studio, where she remained until her retirement. Beyond work, she gave her time generously-participating in the Eugene Jaycees, enjoying square dancing, and volunteering as a "Rocker" for NICU babies at Sacred Heart Hospital, a role she cherished most.
She married Samuel T. Ellis of Eugene in 1970 and was previously married to James R. Norwood of Tacoma and Eugene in 1953.
Betty is survived by her children, Michael E. Norwood of Eugene, and Wendy J. Howell of Tualatin; her son-in-law, Barry L. Howell; and daughter-in-law, Linda Norwood. She was a proud grandmother to six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Julie Anne Laughlin of Ventura; her stepson, Ronald James Norwood of Portland; her daughter, Paula Marie Norwood, and her husband, Samuel T. Ellis of Eugene.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 777 Coburg Rd, Eugene, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Meals on Wheels Lane County or to Boys Town, both are organizations she felt strongly about.
We find comfort in knowing that our mother and grandmother's legacy lives on in the many lessons she taught us-about appreciating the beauty in nature, the arts, music, poetry, and the simplest joys of life. These memories and values will continue to inspire us always.
