On Saturday, November 29, Betty Jean Vanover, the heart and matriarch of our family, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home, surrounded by her children and a close family friend, Theresa Leito. Known to us as Mom, Mama, and Granny, always saw the good in everyone, no matter their faults. She never spoke unkind words but was quick to share her advice when we needed it. Her family, Lighthouse Baptist Church family, Jessamine Senior Center’s friends, and other close friends adored her kind heart and brought her so much joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert G. Vanover, her mother, Dora Gullette Land, her stepfather, Newton Land, her grandparents, Suzy and Brown Gullette, two half-brothers, Ronnie Land, and Charlie Alden, and her beloved son Michael (Mack) Vanover.
Betty is survived by a half-sister, Martha Hayes of IN, three children, Linda Akers, Bruce Vanover, and Darrell Vanover, all of Nicholasville: five grandchildren, Kevin Vanover, of Lancaster, Shevawn Akers (Jared Downing), and Shawn Akers (Debbie) of Lexington, Christina Harvey (Justin) of Nicholasville, and Cassidy Stamper (Derik) of Richmond, and ten great-grandchildren, Preston and Peyton Vanover, Hayden Barnes, Emerson Downing,,, Karsen and Grayson Akers, Luke Stamper, and Landon, L:ogan, and Lucas Harvey.
Betty is also survived by her cousin, who was more like a sister, Rachel Arnold of Nicholasville, and her cousin and lifelong friend, Ernie Abney of Florida.
Visitation will be held from 10-12 on December 5th, at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Nicholasville, and the funeral will immediately afterward, with a private burial at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will include Kevin Vanover, Shawn Akers, Hayden Barnes, Jerad Downing, Derik Stamper, and Steve Arnold.
In lieu of flowers, Mom would love you to make a donation to God’s Pantry Food Bank to help feed the hungry this holiday season.
