Betty Jean Vos was born on March, 9, 1932 to Owen and Eva (Parriott) Lewis in Imperial, Nebraska. When she was in fifth grade, her family moved from Wauneta, Nebraska to Bridgeport, Nebraska. As everyone knows, Betty struggled with her hearing. At the age of 7, Betty was diagnosed with scarlet fever that almost took her life and impacted her hearing. Her father saved her life by driving to McCook, Nebraska to retrieve a doctor who was able to save her life but unable to save her hearing. In 1948, the family moved to Commerce City, Colorado. Growing up, Betty attended Adams City High School in Commerce City and graduated in 1950. Following graduation, Betty worked for Public Service in Denver, Colorado. On April 22, 1957, Betty was united in marriage to Nelson John Vos in Arvada, Colorado. They lived on a farm in the Hardwick, Minnesota area until March 1959 when they moved into Hardwick. Nelson passed away on May 8, 2004. On August 15, 2025, Betty passed away at the age of 93 years, 5 months and 6 days at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, Minnesota.
Betty was a member of First Baptist Church in Luverne. She was a fantastic cook and an amazing baker. She could taste any dish and tell you what ingredient(s) would make the dish even better. She was also known for her delicious dessert (Dutch letters) which were the highlight of the holiday season. Betty loved all animals, especially cats and even raccoons, and sometimes had them as indoor pets. She also loved riding horses. She was a dedicated reader and would sometimes read two novels a week. Entering Betty’s home, you were always greeted with an old western on the TV, along with nuts, candies, and other delicious treats galore. Betty was an enthusiastic gardener with a large variety of flowers that bloomed throughout the season. The most important aspect of her life was her relationship with her best friend Jesus Christ.
Betty is survived by her children, Michael Owen (Janelle) Vos of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Loren Paul (Shirelle) Vos of Flandreau, South Dakota; daughter-in-law, Millie Vos of Persia, Iowa; sister, Camilla (Bob) Witting of Aurora, Colorado; 9 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson; children, Phillip Vos and Susan Anderson; parents, Owen and Eva; and sister, Mae Wood Brown.
