Beverly Joy Butter

January 2, 1946 – February 21, 2026

Beverly Joy Butter, beloved mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Paul and Rosalie Snyder. She was independent, inquisitive, and smart. After graduating high school at 16, she went straight into college and teaching, and dedicated her career to elementary and college students for more than 30 years, earning 2 masters degrees along the way.

As a lifelong educator and learner, Bev helped establish the first Jewish preschool in South Dayton, Ohio; taught about the Jewish holidays in her kids' schools, was a founding member of Temple Beth Or, and took continuing education classes after retirement. Wherever she went, Bev helped build communities, made everlasting friends, and left a lasting impression. She was dedicated, engaging, resilient, and a character. She was an advocate for many causes.

She found joy taking walks with friends and her dogs, traveling with family, reading mysteries and gossip magazines, kibbitzing on the phone, answering every question correctly on Jeopardy, and seeing Broadway shows and plays. She attended as many games, meets, and performances of her kids and grandkids as she could.

Above all, Bev cherished her family, and moved to Columbus, OH to be closer to them. She called herself a "Mama Bear." She was a fierce protector and a force to be reckoned with, especially if you messed with "her cubs." She was a second mom to many. Her children and her grandchildren, whom she lovingly called "her heart," were her greatest pride and happiness. She will be missed deeply by her son Jeff (Melanie); daughters Dorey and Jodi (Josh); and grandchildren Ryan, Nora, Hannah, Ben, and Elie; brother Larry (Georgene); nieces Maddy (Steve) and Jessica (Michael), and nephew Rob (Robin).

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am, Friday, March 20, 2026 at Congregation Beth Tikvah, 6121 Olentangy River Road, Worthington (Zoom Link Below).

Her family encourages people to spend time with loved ones, hang out in nature, or teach someone else something new, like Bev did. In lieu of flowers, if you'd like to donate in her memory, consider causes related to literacy, heart health, or animals.
