Bill Kerr

LINDSIDE, WV – Billy Junior "Bill" Kerr, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, VA. Born April 12, 1929, in Pembroke, VA, he was the son of the late Walter Thomas and Elmer Sadie Cumbee Kerr. Bill was a member of the Pembroke Presbyterian Church. He was a proud U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and later was a member of the American Legion Rowe Jones Post 145, serving with the VFW Honor Guard. He retired from Celanese in Narrows, VA, and enjoyed working on the farm in Lindside. Additionally, he was a past member of the Rock Camp Wikel Ruritan Club and a former member of the Pembroke Water Authority.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Sue Dyer Kerr; son, Stephen Kerr; stepson, Michael Hazelwood; two sisters, Margaret Ann Elio and Loretta Lindsey; brother, Jimmy Kerr; and son-in-law, Barry Carter.
Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Vernie Bradley Hazelwood Kerr; one son, David Alan Kerr of Pembroke, VA; one daughter, Kathy Kerr Carter of Pembroke, VA; one stepson, Gordy Hazelwood and wife Angie of Lindside, WV; one stepdaughter, Marsha "Blackie" Barnett and husband Lee of Statesville, NC; four brothers, Walter Kerr of Narrows, VA, Frank Kerr and wife Della of Newbern, NC, Wayne Kerr, and Gary Kerr and wife Shelby, all of Eggleston, VA; one sister, Mabel Mahaffey of Mechanicsville, MD; grandchildren, Davey Kerr and Sarah, B.J. Thompson and Nichole, Teddy Jensen and Marinda, Heather Lester, J.R. Barnett and Crystal, Angie Barnett, Ethan Hazelwood and Kaylee, and Samantha Hazelwood Penna and Anthony; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with military rites will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Dr. John Sauvage officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hoges Chapel, Pembroke, VA. Visitation will be held from 12:00PM until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Sterl Morris, Davey Kerr, Ethan Hazelwood, Anthony Penna, Jonathan Barnett, and Joey Hazelwood will serve as pallbearers. J.R. Barnett and Gabriel Lester will serve as honorary pallbearers.
