Bill D. Nittler, 75, of Medicine Lodge, KS, died Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital.
He was born on December 16, 1948, the son of Bert F. Nittler and Polly Ann (Gaddis) Nittler. He graduated from eighth grade in Lake City and then attended high school at Medicine Lodge. After graduating from high school in 1966, he went to Pittsburg Technical College in Pittsburg, Kansas until 1968. From 1968 to 1972 he served in the United States Air Force which included a tour in Viet Nam. After a brief time working in Kansas City, he returned to the farm where he worked for two years before beginning to work as a truck driver for Clarke Oilfield Company and later J&M Water Service. It was during this time that he met his future wife while hauling oil to the roads around her parents' farm near Hardtner.
On July 21, 1979, he married Laura (Graves) Nittler in Kiowa, KS. They were blessed with a son Travis Kale and daughter Heather Marie, who were his pride and joy. After suffering severe injuries in a truck accident, Bill's physical capabilities were limited, but it never stopped him from doing anything he could for them. He was very active in their lives from coaching them in little league, to helping build the batting cage at the ballpark, to working all day on the ball field after a rainstorm to get it dried out for a game. Bill loved attending their sporting events from junior high to high school and making it every one of Heather's college games at Fort Hays and Barton County.
Bill was such a strong and courageous man who handled his adversity with grace, and always had a smile on his face. He persevered without complaining and never said no to anyone who needed his help. What an inspiration he was to us all. When his grandchildren started arriving, it brought such joy to him. He loved attending their school functions, and when his health limited him, he enjoyed watching them on the internet.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Laura Nittler of Medicine Lodge, KS are one son, Travis (Audrey) Nittler of Wichita, KS; one daughter, Heather (Jason) Evans of Bucklin, KS; Four grandchildren, Gentry Nittler, Karlee Evans, Jake Evans, and Jovi Nittler; four brothers, Jan Nittler of Arkansas City, KS, Kent (Sandy) Nittler of Medicine Lodge, KS, Randy (Deb) Nittler of Parkerfield, KS, and Jody (Debby) Nittler of Medicine Lodge, KS; brother-in-law, Al Disney of Hutchinson, KS. He was also blessed with his wife's siblings, Suzie (Bruce) Reynolds, Russel (Rita) Graves, Mary (Dwayne) Turnbow, Roberta (Ray) Trent, Chuck (Tammy) Graves, Cecilia (Tom) Williams, and Leo (Dana) Graves, and many nieces and nephews
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dayna Richardson Disney.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 300 S. Main St., Medicine Lodge, KS with Pastor Tom Walters officiating. Military honors will be held at the church by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
