Billie "Bill D. Dunshee, 88, of Collins, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa surrounded by his loving family. Per his wishes he will be cremated, and a private family service will be held. Friends are invited to join Bill's family at Rich and Chris Maxwell's house for a celebration of life visitation beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 12th, 2024. He will be laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa.
He was born in Wayne County, Iowa on August 30, 1935, to Raymond and LaVon Dunshee. Bill grew up in rural Colo where he attended country school as a child. Some say the streets were not safe in Central Iowa when Bill started driving. At the Marshalltown racetrack he burned the tires right off of the family car. Luckily, he graduated with the class of 1953 from Colo High School. Following school, he joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict. Bill married the love of his life Dorothy "Doe" Long on July 8, 1954, at the Collins Methodist Church in Collins. The couple were lifelong Collins residence where they were very active in the community. There was never a gray area with Bill, and you always knew right where he stood on all topics. He was famous for his one liners and his quick wit. Bill worked at the DOT for 30 years before retiring in 1986. After retiring Bill went back to work and from 1986 - 1989 he worked at D&M Road Maintenance, 1990 - 2005 at Ft. Dodge Asphalt, and then 2006 he worked at Denco Highway Construction. Bill was an amazing husband, father and grandpa. Even buying a bus to haul the grandkids around for fun. Another time he thought he could out jump the grandkids on the moped, he was wrong and made a trip to the ER. He will be greatly missed by all that had the opportunity to meet him.
Bill was a member of the Collins American Legion and the Collins Masonic Lodge. He loved spending time with his family, swing dancing with Doe, the Iowa Hawkeyes, farming, happy hour, golfing, and fishing.
Those left to cherish her loving memory are his children Cindy (Keith) Patterson of Ankeny, IA, Chris (Rich) Maxwell of Collins, IA, and Bill (Terri) Dunshee of Ames, IA; grandchildren Kevin (Kaity) Patterson, Kent (Laura ) Patterson, Kyle (Julia) Patterson, Chad (Abbey) Maxwell, Abbey (Kyle) Krampe, Ben (Chantelle) Maxwell, Jake (Jessi) Dunshee, Kelsey (Jason) Kang, and Kate Dunshee; great-granchildren Kellen, Krue, Kael, Kylee, Kase Beau and Ella Patterson, Kaylyn and Kamdyn Krampe, Blake, Brecken, Noah, Annie, Owen Maxwell, and Mara Kang; brothers Barry (Sally) Dunshee and Bob Dunshee; sister Denise (Paul) Conrad: sister-in-law Bonnie (Duane) Severson; many nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doe; siblings Waneva, Carolyn, and Dave.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the family's attention Chris Maxwell, 608 4th Ave, Collins, IA, 50055.
