Billie Wunderl Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 16, 2025.
Billie Childress Wunderl was born on October 6, 1940 to James and Anabel Childress, in San Angelo, Texas. Billie

passed away peacefully in her home on August 7, 2025, in San Angelo, Texas. Three of her nieces were with her at the

time of death.

She was raised in Sherwood and Mertzon, Texas, where she attended Mertzon schools and graduated in 1958.

After graduating from Mertzon High School, she moved to San Angelo, where she attended San Angelo College, a

community college at the time, finishing in 1960. After that she went to Abilene where she completed her degree in

education at McMurry University. She did her student teaching at Eagle Pass, Texas, before returning to San Angelo to

teach at Fairview schools in the Wall ISD from 1972-1980. She continued her education and received a Bachelor's of

Business Management degree in 1970 and a Master's of Business Management in 1972 from Angelo State University.

Billie married Joseph Wunderl on April 30, 1988 and worked with him at his insurance agency until he passed away. She

had no children of her own, but was very active in the lives of her nephews and nieces.

Billie was an amazing educator. She received many awards and had several newspaper articles written about her

for her gift of teaching her student's lifetime knowledge and skills. Billie was always taking her nieces and nephews on

"fieldtrips".

The fieldtrips were definitely geared around something educational. She was a very unselfish, family oriented person.

"Aunt Billie" as her nieces and nephews can tell many stories about everything they experienced because of her. She

would always turn all visits and trips into an educational experience for them. She definitely created lifelong memories

and laughs for all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Wunderl, her parents, a brother, James (Jimmy) Childress, a

nephew, Jason Harris, three sisters, Judy Parker, Linda Harris, and Susan Oakley, one sister-in-law, Tommie Childress, and

two brothers-in-law, Frank Olson and David Newman. She is survived by her sister, Brenda Olson of San Antonio, Texas,

a brother John Childress and wife, Connie, of Dalhart, Texas, a brother-in-law David Harris of Sonora, Texas, and numerous

nephews and nieces.

Billie was an avid reader, especially when her health started deteriorating. She had trouble sleeping at night and

sometimes would read for most of the night. She kept a list of the books that she read and shared the books with others.

At Billie's request there will be not be a service. Memorials can be made to the Wounded Warriors organization, Boys

Ranch, or the American Cancer Association. Billie donated to these organizations throughout her lifetime.
