Billy Ray Dunn, a dedicated member of the Ellerbe community and a retired employee of the CSX railroad, passed away peacefully at his home on January 4, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on August 28, 1935, in Richmond County, North Carolina, Billy lived a life marked by service, passion, and his unwavering commitment to family and friends.
Billy’s career with the CSX railroad was one of pride and dedication, embodying the hard-working spirit that characterized his life. In addition to his professional pursuits, he was an esteemed member of Ellerbe First Presbyterian Church, where he served diligently as a deacon. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through countless experiences.
In his leisure time, Billy found great joy in a variety of hobbies and activities. He was a passionate duck hunter and an avid fisherman, relishing the time spent in nature. His love for outdoor sports extended to golf as well, showcasing his diverse interests. Billy was also a prominent member of the Rod & Gun Club and the Ellerbe Civitan Club, where he built lasting friendships and contributed positively to his community. An expert marksman, he enjoyed working with guns—truly reflecting his engagement with nature and shooting sports.
Billy is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Ruby Webb Dunn, and their three daughters: Cheryl Sink (Layne), Kim Yates (Tony), and Kellee Greene (Jimmy). He took immense pleasure in his role as a grandfather to Garrett Yates (Laura), Elizabeth Potterfield (Tripp), Kyle Sink, Meggan Snead (Andrew), Heather Pack (Michael), Brittany Greene, and Molly Wall (Logan). Billy’s legacy will continue to thrive through his cherished great-grandchildren: Rett, Sophia, Nora, James, Jacey, Quinn, and Emery.
He is also remembered fondly by his sisters, Faye Ritter and Pat McIntyre (Wes).
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Frauline Burns Dunn, as well as his sisters Naomi Dawkins, Bobby Dunn, and Gene Dunn, who are with him now in spirit.
A funeral service to honor Billy Ray Dunn will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Ellerbe, located at 133 Ballard Street, on January 7, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM. Rev. James Watson will officiate. Burial will be held privately in Ellerbe Cemetery.
Billy Ray Dunn's enduring spirit and the impact he made in the lives of those around him will forever be remembered. His family and friends will carry his memory in their hearts, honoring his legacy of love, service, and profound spirit.
