Billy Gerald Furr, 88, of Oakboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, devotion, and quiet strength. Born and raised in Oakboro, Billy's life was rooted in the values of hard work, loyalty, and community. At just 17, Billy enlisted in the United States Army, where he served honorably as a Military Police officer. His time in the service shaped his lifelong respect for law enforcement and deepened his sense of duty. Upon returning home, Billy began a distinguished 31-year career with the City of Charlotte, ultimately serving as the head of the Printing Department. He especially enjoyed spending time with the police officers, owing to his time as an MP in the service. His dedication and leadership left a lasting mark on the city he helped shape. Billy's life was rich beyond his professional accomplishments. He was a passionate outdoorsman who found joy in hunting and coaching youth sports. With the Mint Hill Athletic Association, he led his baseball team to a state championship, and later brought the same commitment and heart to coaching football in Matthews. His mentorship touched countless young lives, instilling discipline, teamwork, and confidence. In 1962, Billy met Glenda on a blind date-a serendipitous beginning to a love story that spanned 63 years. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, resilience, and unwavering devotion. Billy was a proud father to Mickey Furr (wife Lisa) of Mooresville, NC, and Terri Alston of St. Simons Island, GA. He cherished his grandchildren: Mickey Gray Furr, Logan Furr, Philip Alston, and Jack Alston. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Willene Simpson of Oakboro. Billy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, whose memories he carried with him always. The family has entrusted Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home with the honor of caring for Billy. A service celebrating his life will be held at noon on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in the funeral home chapel. Visitation will begin at 11 AM. Following the service, friends and family are invited to join for interment at Mt Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Billy's life was a testament to quiet leadership, steadfast love, and the kind of legacy that lives on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
