Billy Jack Gawf, 87, of Fort Gibson, OK passed away Friday, December 22, 2023, at his home in Fort Gibson, OK. Billy was born in Nicut, OK on Saturday, October 24, 1936, the son of James Jackson Gawf and Tilda Ann Gawf (Cooper).
Billy was a devoted and skilled barber, dedicating 34 years of his life to the community in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and an additional 2 years in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A true patriot, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean War.
Billy was an active member of the community, volunteering with the DAV of Muskogee. A true sports enthusiast, he enjoyed playing golf and cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners and the Saint Louis Cardinals. Billy also loved watching Andy Griffith reruns regularly. Above all, Billy cherished making memories with his family and enjoying his grandchildren.
Billy is survived by his wife of 63 years Lee Gawf; children: Jackie Gawf of Tahlequah, Derek Gawf and wife Brenda of Fort Gibson, Dana Walker and husband Tommy of Fort Gibson, John Gawf and wife Debbie of Tahlequah; grandchildren: Jeremy Gawf and wife Sara of Boerne, TX, Amber Gawf of Tahlequah, Athena Davis of Moore, Justin Walker and wife Kristin of Fort Gibson, Johnny Gawf of Tahlequah, Chris Smith of Tahlequah, Amanda Walker of Tahlequah, Ashley Horn and husband Logan of Tahlequah; sister-in-law Freda Gawf; brother-in-law Wesley Malone; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and all of his favorite nieces and nephews (you know who you are).
Billy was preceded in death by his parents James Jackson Gawf and Tilda Ann Gawf (Cooper); siblings: Virginia Harkreader and husband Dobe, Imogen Gawf, James Gawf, John Gawf, Sue Miller and husband Pete, Alice Wilkie, Arthur Gawf and wife Wanda; grandson Jason Gawf, and grandson-in-law Khretien Davis.
A visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Monday, January 1, 2024, at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home of Fort Gibson. Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 am Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Fort Gibson Church of Christ with Brother Johnny Waltrip officiating. Interment will follow at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Jeremy Gawf, Justin Walker, Johnny Gawf, Lee Wilkie, Melvin Francis, and Ken Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Wes Malone, Tommy Walker, Chris Smith, and Phil Cheatham. Services under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home.
